Quarter Mile driving tips?

Hello!!

I took my car up santa pod a few weeks back, did two runs.

I must admit, having all this power is very easy on the road to see off pretty much anyone that comes along.

However, I found myself struggling on the 1/4 to get a decent time, the best of the two runs I did was 15.88, I think this is due to my poor driving. Previous cars (naturally aspirated) you just need to thrash the bollox off it and its generally the fastest way of getting to the end of the track.

After some road practice I'm now thinking I'd be better changing up when I hit 4500rpm to keep the car on boost, anyone else got any 1-4 mile driving tips?

Hi,

I went to the Pod in mine last year and was able to
get a 14.1 time had some bogging down off the line on
a few runs but found slipping the clutch in about 2.5 rpm
helped a bit.

It is harder than it looks to get a good launch and not to over rev!!

2.5-3K for launch, shift at 6K 1st and 2nd and 5.5 for third. I think Audi claimed 1/4 mile time of 14.3 Sec in Europe, 14.4 in the US. Give us a shout next time you go....

15.88?

First, get your car checked out. You should be 1.5 seconds quicker than that. (MG's would beat that time!).
My experience is that it's really hard to just drop the clutch in the S4. My best starts have been at about 4k
in 1 st and slipping the clutch in rather than dropping it. I ama crap driver though and do find it hard to
get going.

Mine is a stage two and consistently lights the wheels at 4K, followed by bouncing of the rev limiter. Not good for the transmission....

yeah not really good for the car, I've only launched twice.
basically I give it 5k, half lift the clutch until it bites, then drop it, followed by a quick shift into second and away i go. fecking awesome though.
2nd time i did it with ESP off and and I sat there spining all four into 2nd and thought, no....not good for the car and lifted off.

last year I did 3 run's in my S4. 13.8, 13.9 and 13.5. this was when the car was running cat back exhaust and remap from AMD only. power was at 320bhp. it all in the launch about 2.5k no spin.

Will be trying it this year now it is running over 400bhp.

You make or break your run in the first 60'. The launch is absolutely critical. Shoot for 1.8-1.9 60' times stock and 1.7-1.8 60' times chipped.

When I had a GIAC chip and Neuspeed cat back, I'd run 13.1@105 mph with a 1.80' 60' time.

The few times I've actually deliberately tried to get some decent 0-62mph times (via a TrakM8 gps unit), I've found that side stepping the clutch from anywhere between 3.5 - 4k rpm gave the best results without trashing the clutch. With all that traction, you can quite easily burn your clutch out by slipping it!

Personally, I've never driven anything else quite as easy as the S4 to get a good launch without either masses of wheelspin or modern day traction control systems taking over.

p.s. my best 0-62 time was 5.51sec

Stage 2+

0-60' 2.04 Secs, 0-60 Mph 4.8 Secs, Gtech Pro RR times.

Must get to the pod sometime soon....

www.theresults.com
I dumped the clutch at 5k and changed up around 6400, I beat a standard RS4 till the last few meters, we finished near dead on with hundreths separating us
