New laptops dont have a serial port which is why they do a USB one.
Serial port one works just fine.
You could also build your own for around 20 notes.

You cant say that without giving more information!
You got some plans? And supplier of the DLC socket?
I guess then you just have to buy the software!

This guy does them, but be warned, some of the standard connectors are too tight for the S4 socket housing - it might be easier all round if you got the lot from VAG-COM - no issues with fitting.

We usually get our OBD2 bits from Andy Whittaker.
See here:

He also has a VAGFIX utility to fix bad checksums in your ECU - should you ever have the urge to disassemble it !

Plus the VAG Com purchase will unlock the software... is that right?

Yes, you can purchase VAG COM to unlock some features.
However most of them work as shareware anyway.

Ok did it anyway, and ordered the Serial VAG-Com. Thought if im going to plug something into a car worth 13k It would be the proper one, not one I have made!
Also we will now have one in East Kent!
I can also see if my water temp sensor is knackered!

As Uwe states on his site, the serial connector is the preferable option for technical reasons.
It is also worth noting that development on the non-dongle version has stopped. So if you don't buy one of Uwe's key-com leads, you will be stuck with version 311. (Not that this may be a problem - I am 'stuck' with 311 and it works for me, but sometime in the future if I get a new car, I might need to upgrade to the latest version).

Dippy you've lost me. What has AWE to do with VAGCOM? How do I know what version I have?
I have the serial port VAGCOM, bought it about 2 years ago.
