High pitched juggly noise from back of S4

Post by BlackShadow » Tue Sep 28, 2004 1:59 pm

A high pitched, jiggly noise is coming from the back of the S4. You hear it at low speed, and it is more marked over cobble-stoned streets - i.e. as if something were loose. When you get moving along, above 30 mph, you can't hear it any more. However, I presume it is still making the noise.

Anybody any idea what this might be? I've had it for a few months and nothing has droppped off. Nevertheless, wouldn't mind knowing what it is?

Noise

Post by Mik » Tue Sep 28, 2004 4:06 pm

Hi

Have you had your oil seals changed on the back diff yet? Could be because your rear diff is leaking oil. Had similar noise when my diff was leaking - had new oil seals and oil topped up and it was all back to normal. Cant remember the cost, but it wasnt much at all (AmD did it for me in the summer)

Cheers

Mik

Thanks Mik, I shall bear this is mind next time I take it down MTM. How long did you run with the problem before taking it in for repair? I've probably done 2,000 - 3,000 miles and the diff hasn't seized, yet.

Noise

Think I must have done about 5k miles with the noise and it was slowly getting worse. Only found out what it was when AmD had the car up on a lift to fit a drive train stabiliser, so they saw bits of oil on the rear diff.

Hope you can get it sorted, probably worth having a look underneath the car.

Umm - her 1.8T quattro is not dissimilar, bit more rumbly sound, slight oil leak, recently put half a litre in. Dealer is quoting about £300 incl for new seals. In fact Although I'd heard the noise it was the annual service that dealer commented ...... shame on me :(

Just spoke to Kim at QST. He didn't immediately come to the same conclusion as you chaps, which means nothing really. However, I will be taking my car down to QST to get the sport cats fitted soon (with rechipping) and I'll get them to look at this problem. I just hope that nothing goes wrong with the car on the trip to France next week  , before it goes down to QST.
