Mixing tyres

Last year I had my wheels nicked and the insurance company replaced them with new wheels with Avon ZZ3 tyres fitted.
No real problems with the Avons, but wouldn't have chosen them myself! (I had Toyos before).
A year on both my front tyres have worn at the outside edges and need changing. Not sure if my tracking is out or if this is just a common failure mode with quattro. (Will get the alignment checked whatever I end up doing).
Don't really want to replace them with Avons, but not sure about mixing another brand with the Avons at the back.
Don't really want to replace all 4 tyres and chuck away the rears which have pleanty of tread. Conserving cash as waiting for the "final" bill for my recent house extension.
I know ideally you should replace all 4 tyres at once, but how important is this in practice. After all as it is my worn tyres at the front probably have quite a different characteristic to my rears.
Have had some mixed advice.
Local dealer said I should replace all 4 with Michelin PS2 for £139 each!
Elite Reading said OK to change just the fronts.
Toyos for £105.16 all in and PS2s for £120.44
Micheldelver said OK to change just the fronts, but that it was important that the rolling diameters as close as possible with similar amounts of tread front and rear.
Toyos £95.23 all in, PS2s £115.28 and the joker in the pack Goodyear F1s for £98.15. Quite fancy the F1s for that price and they're what the guy recommended.
Last year Elite beat Micheldever on price, so maybe they will match (plus I live in Reading and wouldn't have to sit in such a queue!).
My car has 75K miles, with cambelt change and 80K service approaching quickly, so I'm keen to save money if I can.
Don't want to break the car or dangerously affect the handling though either. I normally drive like your gran if that helps!
Any real world experience out there?
David
