Mixing tyres

Post by DJG » Tue Aug 31, 2004 6:11 pm

Last year I had my wheels nicked and the insurance company replaced them with new wheels with Avon ZZ3 tyres fitted.

No real problems with the Avons, but wouldn't have chosen them myself! (I had Toyos before).

A year on both my front tyres have worn at the outside edges and need changing. Not sure if my tracking is out or if this is just a common failure mode with quattro. (Will get the alignment checked whatever I end up doing).

Don't really want to replace them with Avons, but not sure about mixing another brand with the Avons at the back.

Don't really want to replace all 4 tyres and chuck away the rears which have pleanty of tread. Conserving cash as waiting for the "final" bill for my recent house extension.

I know ideally you should replace all 4 tyres at once, but how important is this in practice. After all as it is my worn tyres at the front probably have quite a different characteristic to my rears.

Have had some mixed advice.

Local dealer said I should replace all 4 with Michelin PS2 for £139 each!

Elite Reading said OK to change just the fronts.

Toyos for £105.16 all in and PS2s for £120.44

Micheldelver said OK to change just the fronts, but that it was important that the rolling diameters as close as possible with similar amounts of tread front and rear.

Toyos £95.23 all in, PS2s £115.28 and the joker in the pack Goodyear F1s for £98.15. Quite fancy the F1s for that price and they're what the guy recommended.

Last year Elite beat Micheldever on price, so maybe they will match (plus I live in Reading and wouldn't have to sit in such a queue!).

My car has 75K miles, with cambelt change and 80K service approaching quickly, so I'm keen to save money if I can.

Don't want to break the car or dangerously affect the handling though either. I normally drive like your gran if that helps!

Any real world experience out there?

Try Bracknell Tyre and Battery mate.
You wont find cheaper tyres than them.

There seems to be a variability in the intrinsic handling properties of the S4. I had big (and dangerous problems) running different tyres front to rear. My car came fitted with Michelin pilot sport 1s all round. The fronts wore 1st and were replaced by the then sucessor the michelin PS2s. Later discovering that the PS2s have a higher traction rating than the PS1s the car oversteered alarmingly on wet roads and fairly sensible speeds.

I guess you should be alright if you have similar traction tyres (its written on the sidewall - A, AA etc) but for me it is not worth the risk anymore.

Wow! Thanks Golfather :thumb:
Cheaper than Micheldelver

Toyos £88.13
Michelin PS2s £101
Goodyear F1 £88

All prices all in

The guy said no problem just changing the fronts, but suggested that only Audi should touch the alignment......

Thanks for your reply DavidR

Anyone have experience of F1s?

David,

Elite have quoted me £113 for PS2s. I've used both Elite and Bracknell Tyre & Battery. Whilst the Bracknell company are good, Elite knock the spots off them in terms of technical knowledge, and a bit better in care of fitting. In your situation you'll be fine with BT&B.

Also, as I know how you drive, I don't believe you'll experience any problem with different tyres front and rear.

BT&B are fine mate
They fit tyres all day long, to all sorts of cars, dealer contracts etc, and they also supply new alloy
wheel packages, so they have to take some sort of care over their workmanship.
Admittedly their workshop may not be like a "showroom" but their prices are so low, it makes it very worthwhile.
People from all over the South go there.

Big  for BT&B

Great price (£88 each all in for Goodyear F1s) and checked my tracking for free.

(First quote I had from my local tyre place was to change all 4 tyres for which they wanted £550.)

Found the guys very friendly and helpful. Crazy busy with lots of car shuffling though and a bit of a wait.

Turn in feels much sharper and I'm quite suprised how much better it feels with just the new fronts. Perhaps the Avons ( ) really were crap. Certainly have never heard of anyone choosing to fit them. Daft things is is at the local tyre place they were more expensive than Pilot Sports 2s :? Go figure

My mate put Avons on his BMW, swapped them out after a few hundred miles, the car was shocking.

Just putting the new Kumho ku19 on mine, £68 a corner. The current 712's (£63ea but out of stock) have been excellent, thought I'd try the new ones.
