Noisy Brakes

For some time now my car seems to have been suffering with noisy brakes.
I have a constant squeal as I drive down the road, and the pads are rattling in the caliper. Both noises are most annoying and cause people to turn and look.
Before I purchased the car, Golich had replaced the discs and pads with genuine Audi items front and rear so I know there isn't a problem with these.
The first noise to be heard was the squealing, so I removed the pads cleaned out the dust and applied copperslip grease.
This seemed to cure the problem for a while but this has now returned. Since then my car has now developed the rattle, which is caused by the pads rattling in the calipers. (I presume it is the outer pair of pads as the inner ones locate inside the pistons)
What surprised me is that there doesn't appear to be any retaining springs on the caliper assembly and the pads are held in purely with the 2 torque type screws at the bottom of the pads.
The reason I mention this is that I have just seen Simon's S4 brakes for sale on Ebay (free plug!) and they have springs attached, but his are from a 1999 spec model and mine is a 98 spec.
I have heard that the pads when new have some adhesive on the back and "glue" into the caliper but they are not designed to be removed and refitted.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.
