On pulling away slowly I often hear a loud mettalic groaning from the front passenger side particularly. Took it to Dovercourt Audi at the weekend and they reckon it is the brake pads "vibrating against the disc" and that this is a unremediable "fault" on the S4. Mine's a 2000 B5. The mechanic said that this often happens as the S4 has 8 brake pads and occasionally they get a little off line/brake dust builds up and causes this sound. I was relieved that it was nothing more serious but the noise is annoying and pretty loud. I have scared a few pedestrians so far . Has anyone any experience of this and how (short of replacing the brakes entirely) you can get rid of it

I'm sorry, but I would take it back to Audi and get them to sort it under warranty(??) There is no excuse nowadays for noisy brakes (racing pads excepted). I have run std discs and pads and after market stuff and have had no strange noises. Kindly remind the service manager that this was a £38k car new and noises like this are not designed in!

I am wondering if its something to do with the pad/disc clearance. Even with the handbrake off, the pads look flush to the pad - you couldnt get a sheet of paper between them from what I can see. I reckon I need to jack the car up and take a look.

I am also getting this intermediately on my AMD Porche upgrade kit..... along with a klunking noise from the front right suspension and a loads whine from the power steering system when on full lock.... has anyone else experienced any of these ?

Would pop back to AMD but I live in Jersey so not so easy, and the local audi dealer, well I wouldn't trust them to clean my car let alone work on it !

Jonno1 - Nige S4 is right. You techs explanation is unacceptable. They shouldn't make a noise. I can't say I recall this prob on standard brakes the two and half years I've been on various Audi forums.

S4jersey - Clunking front suspension - very common on all B5 A4s. - probably the a ball joint/s. Any decent mechanic should be able to sort. There is nothing particularly difficult about replacing the lower ball joints on any A4 to that of any other car. I replaced mine after AMD diagnosed it. Which was strange as I didn't detect the wear in the ball joint myself despite checking and the car and it passing its MOT only 7 days before AMD looked at.

I ran it for another 6 months (it was very slightly worn) It was only when I dismantled the whole front end that I detected the slight wear in the ball joint. AMD told me they could hear it knocking on the rolling road.

Golich, thanks, that has eased my mind a little about the clunk, thought it could be bent suspension or something like that..... the squealing/whine which happens on full lock (about same time as the knock noise) is of more concern.... I always assumed that both problems were normal as it has been like this since I bought it, and the previous owner said it had always done both since AMD fitted 18" wheels and adjustable suspension kit.....

Anyone know what the squealing might be ?

Pardon my english, how do you say the part "wheel rolling" that goes in the chassis. here in Brazil we it´s "rolamento"

I´ve just replaced mine, and now it´s working fine. No noise.

It´s also strange that the brakes are doing this noise. It could be that the pads are worn, or that the rotors are not aligned.
