S4 APR Snub Mount

Post by DavidR » Tue Jan 20, 2004 6:29 pm

Thanks to Nige_S4 for getting hold of this for me fairly cheaply. For anyone wondering, its actually not difficult at all to fit so long as you have access to an inspection pit or a lift. I took 2.5 hours, came across no major problems other than I found it easiest if the snub mount carrier was unbolted from the rear of the radiator support to make it easy to get the new one on.

It seems to do what it advertises, no vibrations and no shaving of mount to fit.

What APR don't tell you in their (very good) instructions is that you need a friend to help and that the easiest way to get the mount on the spindle is to line it up and then push the radiator back until it clicks in.

More likely that I was the only one brave enough to ask

Has it made a big difference ?

David, I look forward to reading your report on it's affect on the transmission, and most importantly if there is any increased vibration...

Dippy, there is no peceivable increase in vibration both at idle and any chosen engine speed. The S4s characteristic clunky transmission feel is noticably tighter and gear changes are slightly tighter too - the easiest way to describe it is as if the car has lost several of its thousand miles really, so the product does much as it says. 1st to 2nd is still stiff, but otherwise there is not the same sloppiness on/off power in gear. I'm pleased with it, but only because it was cheap. If the product was more than £100 then it would look like poor value. This plus the shortshifter make the s4 box a much more pleasant tool
