Hi all,

I currently drive a '95 Golf VR6. I thought this was quite fast until I test drove my friends S reg (98) S4 yesterday. **** me, my golf now feels like the 1.4...

Anyway, the S4 has done 80k miles, fullASH, etc. and he has been advertising it for £12,495 but without much luck. It needs an 80k mile service (£800?) now. I've offered him £8.5k an he said ok - have I got myself a good deal? And more importantly, what sort of things do I need to look out for on it? When browsing through the paperwork, the Audi dealer thought it might require a new tailpipe - this quite cheap?

£8500 for an S4 is Bloody Good no matter what the 80k service might cost!! you've got yourself a good deal there in my opinion my friend!! welcome to RS246 to, its a wicked site.. £8500?? Blimey, either the car is a dog or your mate is a moron. If it's neither of those then maybe you're one lucky git, but that price is suspiciously low...

Get an inspection mate.

The two main things are turbo failure and turbo pipework.

The former is a £3k repair with a dealer (not sure what a tuner or specialist would charge), the latter is just a case of checking the TBB (throttle body boot) and F hose if it has one and replacing as appropriate.
