bose speakers, where are they?????

i recently bought a 2000V S4 which had a Bose upgrade already fitted. Can anyone tell me where on earth all the speakers are and how many there are supposed to be (i read somewhere ther are supposed to be 10 plus a sub)? I didn't even know there was a subwoofer or extra amps!

For what it's worth, the Bose system is one of the best car "hifis" I've heard. It may not have masses of bass and play loud enough to blow the windscreen out, but it is accurate and detailed and reproduces music fairly well. Due to the acoustics of cars generally, you'll never get anywhere near real hifi sound in a car.

I had the Bose upgrade in an A6, a Porsche 996 and a Merc and it's has always been worth the money. Detail is superb.

I think when they say 10 speakers, they are referring to the number of cones i.e. the front speakers in the bottom of the doors have 2 cones + the tweeter at the top of the door panel = 3 per side = 6 in the front. The rear speakers in the doors also have 2 cones per side = 4 for the rear. So that's 6+4=10. The sub on the avant is in boot on the left hand side under the 6-pack CD changer (not sure if the saloon has a sub?)

Agree with the sound quality in the S4 - it is superb, but there are a couple of S3 owners with Bose who disagree.

IIRC you only get the sub in the Avant which is a shame for saloon owners as I think it's great.

I think one of the reasons that Bose sometimes gets slagged is that it needs to be tuned to taste. There is a graphic equaliser on the system which many people including me thinks needs to be adjusted or else the sound might not suit.

I can't remember if the GE is mentioned in the user guide or if it is 'hidden'. If the latter, the details will be found on AudiWorld - someone might post a link.

On the saloon, the sub is under the boot floor behind the spare wheel hole.
BOSE is good for 'standard' car hi-fi, but could certainly be improved upon.

What is the piece of Hi-fi on the undersurface of the back shelf then?

They are the rear mid/bass units on the parcel shelf.

Paul, mine does not have a sub under the boot floor.

I beleive the black box under the parcel shelf is the amp

That is what I thought!

The biggest problem I have is that if you turn the bass up, you get quite a lot of vibration from the back shelf.

I think the graphic equaliser is only " available" on the early Symphony units, about 2000/01. There was certainly a tech feature on Audiworld.

Why would you want to "turn the bass up"?
This would only lead to an even more uneven sound spectrum and greater distortion than normal

Some of the 'modern popular music' I listen to has a bit of a 'beat'. It is usually that which causes the problem.

Dippy is right,

But the sub and the amp in the Avant is actually half between the CD unit and the rear passenger side door.

To get to it you have to remove the rear boot panel. Which amoung other things involves removing the pin that locks the small 1/3 seat in place. To remove this pin you need a box spanner it can be a bit of bugger to get off.

I found the Bose in my Avant lacked mid range it was all base and treble but it's still pretty decent. Thankfully I didn't pay the alleged £1500 upgrade. I'd be sorely disappointed if I did. But it's a personal thing. Besides my hearing is not the best from years of hanging around heavy fabrication shops
