I keep reading your comments about your turbotimer and the mods you made to activate the water pump - any chance you could post a schematic/overview of what is required as it sounds a very good idea [img]images/graemlins/thumbs.gif[/img]
What parts did you use, and how expensive was it ?

Hi Dippy just read through ur installation of the HUD display and it sounds great but just a few questions.... after having it in ur car for a while now how do u find it ? Is it still great or has the 'novelty' worn off?
With regards to the TT, u stated that the in the S4 the ECU only switches on the water pump to cool the turbo only if decides if its hot enough. In the S3 i know for a fact that the auxillary water pump switches on even if i only drive out of the garage first thing in the morning and stays on for about 7-10mins IIRC. So is this different to the S4?
Oh and how is the visibility in the sun ? Good or so-so ?

No the novelty has not worn off, but then I was used to having a boost gauge in my previous car (Impreza). I find a boost gauge to be both a useful diagnostic/confidence tool, but also an aid to driving. Also since my car is chipped, I like to know when my boost is above the stock level, so that I can use it "with moderation".
I did not choose my gauge just because it's HUD, in fact since I positioned it fairly low down, I almost have no advantage from the HUD. No, since I wanted both a BG and a TT, and for the TT to base its time on boost levels used, I only had two choices: The Defi HUD or a Blitz.
I had a Blitz in my Impreza and was quite happy with it, although I had to mount the display fairly low down so it was difficult to drive and see the gauge. It would have been the same for the S4 (the ideal place for the Blitz display would have been just above the ESP & fog light switches). So the Defi seemed to be the best choice. After buying it this was confirmed as the design and quality of build of the Defi is much better than the Blitz. Also the Defi has a remote boost sensor, so it can be mounted very near to the vacuum line, whereas for the Blitz I had to run an airpipe from the manifold thru the bulkhead to the control unit.
I'm really not sure what the difference between the S4 setup and the S4 is. From your description they must be quite different. The only reason why the S4 has the 'afterrun pump' is to circulate water thru the turbo jackets and into the engine (in the reverse direction from normal) where the air-bubbles can be dispersed safely. This is why it only normally switches on when the water temperature is very hot, and even then it does not last long. Obviously the bubbles only really start near boiling point, and the temperature will fall away from this point fairly quickly.
I have had no problems seeing the reflection in all the bright conditions we had this summer. My only advice to anyone fitting it is that the night-time dim mode is too dim for twilight so it should only be activated by main beam lights.

Thanks Dippy, Ive been looking for a boost gauge for a while now and want some one that will not look out of place on the modern interiors of our cars and also one that doesnt involve serious plastic surgery either.
Dont fancy a dial type either so i think this is the more likely one to go for.
