Front brake calipers

Post by tartan_rob » Tue Sep 23, 2003 8:55 pm

Anyone know what tool (and size of tool) can be used to remove the bolts that hold on the front brake callipers? I tried a star key but there are loads more splines than on a normal star bolt.

you need a spline socket. Not sure what size it is, but would guess at an 8mm one.
I brought a set of these sockets from my local car accessory place for less than a tenner.

Don't try to undo it with the star bit you have or a normal allen socket, as you will just chew the head off and have to drill it out

hth.

John.

I removed mine with an simple hex socket (8mm i think). It took me ages to work it out as where the caliper "floats" on the two metal runners would appear to be where they are held on, this it not the case however (i.e. the bit where you remove the 2 dustcaps). The actual mounts are accessible by removing the bracket that holds the rigid pipe in place, and you will find 2 simple hex sockets tucked behind....

Just to confirm, my bolts were not star type etc, they were both 8mm hex bolts. The 2 star ones serve a different purpose and are used to hold the 2 halves of the caliper together...

My 98 S4 only has the T40 torx for locating the brake pad. The other bolts were all normal hex bolts if we are talking about the fronts. It was only the rears that required a large allen ket to remove the actual caliper mounting bracket.

The American Audi manual I downloaded the other day doesn't show any torx other than the one I've mentioned above.

A handy link for all the US A4 manuals

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll start hunting for a spline tool in a range of sizes and take back those that don't fit.
