Oil

Post by DavidT » Sun Sep 14, 2003 8:52 pm

A little advice please.

I'm looking to use fully synthetic oil and will change every 5000 miles but am not interested in the AVS stuff.

What fully synthetic oil do Audi use ? and where else can I buy it cheaper ?

Also what are the alternative fully synthetic oils and can anyone recommend one please ?

I've read through lots of old posts but have not arrived at a clear solution.

Cheers,

David

I had the same questions a little while back. The result (for me) was Mobil 1 0-40.

Check out this thread for more info

Just re-read that thread myself, and you even posted to it !

I guess that it was part of your research, so probably won't actually help you very much.

If you chose the Castrol route, I negotiated quite a good discount at my local BMW dealership for the 1 litre bottles it comes in, so you could give that a go.

David,

Please note that if you are on AVS with the S4 then you MUST use VAG 503.01 oil, so the "AVS stuff" is the good stuff!

Your standard choice is Mobil 1 0W40, Castrol Formula SLX 0W30 and Synta Gold 0W30. AmD use the latter and it's the cheapest. Since I have only ever found the Castrol at Audi dealers in 1l bottles (i.e. expensive), I have been using Mobil 1 at around £28 per 4l from Halfords.

Thanks guys.

Dippy, do I understand correctly, Mobil 1 0W-40 meets VAG 503.01 ?

If so I will buy in bulk and take it to the dealer for them to use at the next service.

Thank you Riz.

That's the oil for me then.

I will try and get a trade price for it and post as a group buy for the forum.

Cool a group buy seems a good idea... my S3 loves sucking the oil dry.

Sorry, I can't make it as I'm flying off to Malta on Sunday. However I don't track my car as I can't afford the risk of a crash

No worries Dave,

I'd like to meet up with you at some point and have a passenger ride in your car if that's OK please ? I am looking for a bit more power and your setup is an option.

Enjoy your trip, I hope its pleasure.

I used to feel the same as you two about trackdays, but I insure my car fully comp with Greenlight for each trackday for £ 65 and it makes me feel like this
