Got my Car Back

Post by jeffw » Fri Jul 11, 2003 10:15 am

Picked the motor up last night from AmD....still in shock over the price (£6300) which included a bunch of other stuff as well as the new turbos...(Tracker, some paint on the bumber, picking the car up from the Audi Dealer)...

What really annoys me is that the Audi dealer took the Air Con system apart (this is when they where investigating a turbo failure) and it's cost me £110 for a air-con recharge...and they also took the fuse out of the fuel pump so AmD couldn't get the car started...

The car is currently 'running in' at 365BHP and will be re-mapped after 1000 miles. This is just to give the turbos a chance to bed in....The most noticable thing is the noise of the Full Milltek system....it's very intrusive in the cabin. Hopefully that will tone down as it soots up.

The reason the turbo had failed was the MAF was dodgy which was making the car run lean and this added to the collapsed center box resulted in the failure. All in all I am beinging to wish I'd never set eyes on it.

At least you've got the car back Jeff
Is your full milltek the dual pipe from cat back or the single pipe version? Might be louder, but it's a nice sound

I'm guessing it's single pipe...I don't actually know

Hi Jeff

Glad you've got your car back. I'm sure the pain in the wallet will soon be forgotten once the turbos are bedded in

Jeff,

For a few weeks after my full Miltek was fitted, I noticed a 'booming' noise inside the cabin at moderate to high boost. However it soon quitened down and now I only really notice it on full boost, and even then it is not that loud. So indeed I assume that it soots up inside and this quietens it.

Your comment about the MAF worries me. Did you suspect there any problems before the turbo actually went?

The MAF caused the failure of the turbo.....in conjunction with the collapsed middle section....

Jeff,

Yes, I know that. What I meant was, did you notice any strange symptoms such as erratic revs, loss of power, overheating etc. before it actually happened? In other words, if a faulty MAF can cause this to happen, are there any symptoms to warn me of it?

Not a sausage....the car was completely normal before it went bang.....possible a little down on power but that's all.

What about DTCs? (do you have VAG-COM?)

I had my MAF changed earlier this year as the car felt like it was not pushing out 330bhp using my top of the range seat-of-the-pants dyno

I used VAG-COM to check the airflow through my MAF and I was at least 15% down on max air-flow - got the MAF replaced under warranty.

Hi Jeff,

Glad you got the car back (less £6,000+....ouch!!!!!!)...Do you think it is worth the 6 grand you paid out for the K04s etc?

Cheers....Jem

Is it worth it....no it's not (given that £6000 would have bought me a Fisher Fury or a Westfield and I didn't have the dosh and it's added £300 to my insurance....)

Is the car better/faster/quicker .....yeap

Does is 'chirp' the wheels when changing from 1st to 2nd ....ohhhh yeah

Hi Jeff,

Yeah glad to hear your back on the road. Re the bill I feel for you mate - I really do . That's a serious amount of dosh. I fail to see how it can cost so bloody much to fit and map a couple of turbos even with the engine out. okay you had some other work done also.

But hell AMD sure is making a dame good living out bread and butter stuff.

I also note Mr. Collin's MTM prices aren't much better at £5800 for 370bhp! I bet the yanks aren't paying nothing like that.

It worries me though that you weren't able to tell there were serious problems ahead.

Anyways - you've got yourself a rocket now enjoy

I actually think that AmD did an excellent job...at a good price as well for the amount of work done. The labour element was 1300+VAT so there where a lot of parts in the £6300.... And they gave me a £500 discount against the remap I already had done by them.
