I love her....but not that much!

Well they say [censored] happens.

Took my loveable S4 to AmD to have a new MAF fitted. AmD noticed that there was an air leak and hooked the system up for a pressure test. Result, one blown oil seal on the turbo necessitating an engine out job to replace yet another set of KO4's

Feel sorry for Scott who is working on her at the moment. Probably could have done without this as they are so busy at AmD with two weeks lead time to get on the rollers.

So I'm seriously considering selling the bitch . I shouldn't refer to my true love like that, I know, but I think the love affair is well and truly over - this is the straw that broke the camels back.

4 months old mate that's a <beep> was it the gearbox mounts that caused this? Must be some reason for this premature failure mate

I need to stress that the turbo's have not failed as such Andy - merely the oil seal on one of them blew as the system was placed under pressure to find an air leak.

AmD are sorting it under warranty and that's all I'm bothered about.

Yes, getting a fair amount of heat from her indoors about the fact that this year the car has been off the road loads - I think you know the feeling

Sorry to hear about it Ian, but you're certainly lucky (and wise) to have the warranty.

It's a bit worrying that the oil seal can break just because of a pressure test - presumably the pressure tested is no more than in normal operation?

How did AmD determine that there was an air leak in the first place?

Well power was down after a new MAF was fitted (and I'm not talking about limp mode as a result of the MAF malfunction)and I assume that AmD could hear the leak under boost.

But apparently they are on a roll and the engine should be back in tomorrow.

Probably the last think AmD needded as I said.

Bad news mate. Shame too as your car flies: as I whitnessed on the way to GTi this year!! You were pulling away waaay too quickly from us.

Anyway it is a no-brainer mate. Get an S2: reliable 380 in a lighter car (should be as quick as your current motor); you can swap turbos without removing the engine; save a shedload of money on modifying expenses (hitting 450+bhp is much cheaper in an S2 than an S4 even after the expense of 5 Carillo rods); rely on decades of experience in understanding the tuning limitations; blah blah blah....Me biased, naaaah!

Ian,

I regularly test my car to see if I'm getting the right boost quickly enough. I did so last night and got my usual 1.3 bar peak.

However I am still unsure if I would definitely spot an air leak by monitoring boost on the gauge.

Since you seem to get problems (but have the warranty to protect you), please would you fit a boost gauge so that you can find out how good it is in diagnosing leaks?

You also have a PM from me...

S2 Driver - an S2 is a very attractive option but remember that I get a car allowance and there are some rules about what sort of car you can get - ie not one that is more than 5 years old. But I am convinced, really

Dippy - Yes, I think a boost guage would be useful - I was thinking of updating Vag Com to the registered one and changing the lead so that I can run some tests.

Remember the warranty applies to the KO4 conversion which was caried out (for the first time in September 2002) - I don't have the full Audi cover. Replied to your mail, BTW.
