Holidays

Post by Joshie » Sun Apr 27, 2003 4:20 pm

Just returned from the family skiing holiday in Val d'Isere.

It just makes me appreciate what a superbly fast and versatile family car the S4 is. Fully loaded with skis, (I have a ski bag), boots, luggage, PC (keeps the kids occupied) etc. etc., I found myself saying (on more than one occasion ) to my long-suffering Mrs how I would have problems finding something as practical.

In France the car really ate up those Kms. You know how it is though, you start off at a steady 110 and then after a couple of hours you have found a comfortable spot at 120....and then its 130.

What happened next sounds like bullshit but I swear its true. I was filling up at the services when an old Peugeot Estate French police car draws up in front. I noticed the gendarme getting out and I thought, [censored], they've caught me in a radar trap further up the autoroute. So he comes over and guess what - he started admiring the car!!! Told him that it had been modded, told him that the car was almost 4 years old so really not that pricey, and yes, I said, you can get number plates that match the make of car in the UK. Had a right good chat - that really made my day.

In Val d'Isere I saw two new S4 Avants with Swiss plates. Noticed that Audi have reverted to the older, traditional S4 badges.

Coming back we started early and then by the time we reached Chambery we were already starting to think about heading straight for Calais the same day, instead of an overnight somewhere in France. Well that was it. In went the Morpheous Radar (figured that as long as I uplugged it and hid the control unit I could argue that I left it in the UK and the radar horn must have triggered the police radar detector detector. Well it really worked and I avoided two traps.

Great fun with a few good tussles. Happy holidays

The only snow I saw this season was at the snozone in MK

When we went to Alpe d'Huez last year we went in my S4, but I didn't find it as practical as you. There was me, the missus and our daughter, plus 2 sets of skis and boots, luggage, push-chair and travel-cot. I have a roof-box and even with that it only just fitted - with one suitcase on the back seat.

Now that we have 2 daughters it will be even tighter for space next year.

However I think I still prefer to drive over to France rather than have to battle through the airport with 2 kids and all the gear...
2001 Silver S4 Avant
AmD remap, APR R1 DVs, APR bipipe, Full Miltek exhaust
H&R coilovers, AWE DTS, Porsche front brakes, Short-shifter, 18" RS4 replicas
Defi-HUD boost gauge / turbo-timer (with afterrun pump modification), Phatbox

With our youngest almost 6 the days of the pushchairs, bottle warmers, nappies etc are but a distant memory So we're talking about one big suitcase, one small suitcase and the ski gear.

Alpe d'Huez is a great resort - skied there quite a few times.

Don't fret - hopefully you'll be back next season
