Strange Brakes vibration when coming to a slow stop

Hi All,
Im hoping an expert on here can point me in the right direction for a strange noise I'm getting on my 98 B5 S4. As I come to a slow stop, with light braking, just before the car stops I hear a fairly loud vibrating noise from the front somewhere and can feel the brakes almost pull on slightly harder to bring me to a stop. I had it checked at my local garage and they seemed to think it was the ABS pump and suggested replacing it for alot of money but said car was safe. The brakes work well and ABS works perfectly when braking hard. Incidentally after doing some hard braking tests at speed and getting the ABS to kick in the noise and vibration is lessened for a short time.
Anyway before I take it to an Audi specialist I wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I could check out.
