Gonna go with the MRC generic ~380bhp map until you sort out your coolers?

i to have been thinking about induction for a while

did the cheese box mod a while ago and it felt a bit smoother but that was when air temps were relativly low
now temps are getting up --- a nice cold unrestricted gulp of air would be a great boost for a turbo'd machine.

has anyone tried through the inner wing or a front fog area mod.
i run the fogless grills to help the intercoolers but not noticed to much help from that either.

i also noticed that one or two of the tuned boys have silver foil covered induction piping to reflect under bonnet heat away--nice touch.
cool charge air means better volumetric efficiency and more power.

Customs gotta be the way to go. With the injectors and pump I reckon I should see just over 400 with my Milltek set-up?

seriously though i have thought about this for a while and if u have a standard untouched air box you can run an air feed into the bottom of it from the front IC grill area..
if you take out a headlight you will see the space and make it fit into the bottom of it feeding in cold air..
Woody - I've thought about this many times too - but never got round to a serious attempt at doing it... until today:

... took my headlight out and removed the D/S bumper grill ... with RS4i/c's theres just NO WAY you can route a hose from the air-box through to the bumper grill area (unless the hose diameter is about 1cm, which would be pointless!) ...I note in your photo you had the stock S4 i/c's in ... maybe able to do it with these in but not RS4 i/c's ....

I wonder how much more space there is for this sort of mod if you are running the FMIC? Should give loads of space!

Maybe ... but all the FMIC installs i've seen end up having the 2 big pipes in and out of the i/c each side which seem to fill the area where the stock i/c's used to be (i've seen one where the bumper grills wouldn't fit back on because of these pipes)

Yes the mrc FMIC takes up the space where the grills go so they can not be replaced after fitting!!!

Having owned the S4 now for 18 months I think i can safeley say that the biggest factor affecting performance is the intake temperatures. the difference in power could be as much as plus or minus 25-30BHP, when comparing a fully heat soaked intake to one cooled fully after say 5minutes of wide open throttle. In my opinion fully insulating the visible intake components, before the MAF is a waste of time. most heat soak occurs when at idle or 0% throttle when coasting. the major metal component's heat up. i am of course refering to the y pipe, the turbos and the intercoolers and to a lesser degree the bi-pipe or similar and the intercooler hoses, not too mention the DV's.

So in real world driving there must be a precise amount of time after which internal engine bay components will return to external ambient temperatures after WOT driving. I believe that this takes far longer than most people realise.

I have considered whether it would be possible to speed up this process or even go below ambient external temeratures by installing a compartment containing " Dry Ice"( frozen carbon dioxide) in the air box, this i would have thought would greatly reduce intake temperatures or at least return them to ambient more quickly.

but there again I have just returned to the office after a lonfg lunch and may just be pissed!!!

Agreed ... the air moves so quickly through these parts that i don't think inssulation will make much difference - however hot they get.

Nice idea - but don't think there's anywhere near enough room in the air-box to fit anything ... and it would impede the flow of air to the filter if you did mange to.

h8cak - how are you getting on with the S-Flow? (that has an ITG filter element doesn't it?)

Didn't you install them? Or did you take them out before you sold the car?

Your dead right for some reason I had the way the airbox works upside down, only had this apart so many times :!:

Reckon it is a sound idea Mate and with what has been said will only work with the standard IC's
