Yes, the additional friction causes it to run hotter. You can notice this between 0W30 and 0W40 on a stock S4.
I'm currently following Oilman's advice: Since my car is not heavily modded and I don't track it, it doesn't need xW50 oil.

S4-99 - I do not recommend 5W40 over 0W40. In the UK climate there is probably no difference at all between these oils. However by definition the 0W40 will be better for the engine at VERY cold temperatures than the 5W40. The UK CAN get to such cold temperatures in winter, especially in the North of England and Scotland.

I buy Mobil 1 0W40 'cos I can get it from Halfords and I can't be bothered to find another source. If I had unlimited access to all the 0W40 and 5W40 oils on the market, I'd buy the cheapest in the summer but still get 0W40 in the winter. However I admit that I am paranoid about caring for my turbos.

My S4 has always had synta gold 5w40 fully sinthetic in it from new as i am aware.
Last owner gave me what he had left over and he said that the priviouse (first) owner had also used it.

There havent been any probs with it so far.

Is this oil ok?

Thanks for all your input guys.

I decided on Millers 5W40 - got some for £24 per 5 litres.

I'll move on to 0W40 in the winter though.

Synta is what I used for two years in my S4 and I now use this in my RS4.
It is what AMD and APS recommend..................
