Question is do the K04 fit straight one without and other parts being required ?

Bad luck mate these warranty places are a bunch of scumbags. You could have done 1000 miles whilst waiting to get a service appointment!

For the K04s to fit you also need custom intake pipes, which are about £200 from AmD. You really should get the chip updated as well otherwise you may experience some driveability issues.

BTW I think AmD charge £45 an hour. Well, they did when I had mine done (about 18 months ago).

Jeff, see my post earlier in this thread - you need a new set of intake hoses, but pennies compared to the cost of the turbos. Also, try haggling with jr as he had a set of K04s for sale.

To be fair to the Warranty company their policy clearly states that the car must be serviced on time but they allow you a 10% variance....the car was serviced at 35.5K and then at 48K because I thought that the service interval was 12K.....:(

Having had a car with a boost guage which actually allowed me to shut the engine down after a wastgate failure and save the turbo (944 Turbo) and having had 2 cars without (Impreza & S4) I must admit that I'll be fitting a boost guage in the near future as well.

Bad luck Jeff. Your story is one of the reasons I haven't bothered buying extra warranty (other than the fact than mine was one of the last S4s made so should be less prone to failures) - that I can't trust them to pay up on a claim, especially as mine is modded (and an import which would probably give them another reason to squirm out).

Anyway, I originally got my boost guage for the turbo timer, but it's also nice to know what boost I'm getting. I had one limp-mode experience last year (I think I got too much rainwater near my pre-cats so one was too cold), and within seconds I could see that boost would not go above 0.4bar. I knew that if it was due to an air leak, trying to get boost would stress the turbos, so I drove home knowing that I was on vacuum all the way.

So indeed I recommend a boost guage, and also a turbo timer.

If there are enought people interested then I'll write and instuction sheet about fitting one, including the afterrun pump mod.

Having just had a pair of KO4's replaced a few months ago I can confirm that the labour at AmD is 18 hours at £55 per hour plus vat plus misc parts. You're looking at £1300 inc VAT.

I would state again that your existing turbos will probably be able to be replaced on an exchange basis. I explored this option myself with Turbo Technics - check their website here. (although Turbo Dynamics are the Borg Warner KKK UK distributors)Why not call turbo technics or turbo dynamics to see what they say Jeff?

Otherwise the KO4's are the other option but I would check with AmD or QST to see if they can be fitted without any changes to the downpipes and fueling before going this route and also enquire what other mods are necessary to make them fit.

OK

Update....I had an interesting discussion with the very nice man at Tonbridge Audi which was along the lines of...

me: 'If I get you to change the turbos and do the work will I have a warranty on the new parts'
Audi Man: 'Not unless the car is returned to standard before leaving the workshop'

Which I suppose is fair enough but if the turbos fails 10 yards down the road it's not covered.....

Anyway the only way I can be sure that it's going to be a decent job and covered by some sort of warranty is to take it to AmD for the full 400BHP conversion.

Car is being collected this morning......can't wait even if I can't really afford to do it.... but as Scott says.....he's never seen a K04 fail on a V6 engine!

Joshie

I'm guessing that yours failed ?

Who do you insure yours through with the mods on ?

Jeff,

Sorry to here about your troubles. Don't see why the Warranty Company shouldn't honour the claim.

Regarding turbo gauges. I to thought as a non-standard item they are a bit max power. But the bottom line is if I'd known the boost pressure I wouldn't have ran around for months with a failed TTB. Also on the odd occasions I've had a loss of power, which I think is related to lack of boost I would be able to see straight away.

APR do a nice centre vent one that looks very original. You having to stick things to your dash or worse, drill holes. Personally I'd have the OCT one for in the rev counter but I have the old analogue clock type dash.
