Had 18.1 today too.

Apparently, there's also a phenomenon associated with the motor brushes on cars with over 100K on the clock.
Will have to have a looky tomorrow.

Out of interest, does anybody know what the motor part number is? Potential Ebay job....
Found this one - MOTOR

Replace the bushes as another option.

Interestingly, there was a post about the fan "squeaking" - a symptom of fubar'd brushes. MY fan has been squeaking......

Might have to order some brushes in the meantime......

Well, that was a great morning! :)

Followed the instructions found on OZAudi and from VWAudi Forum.

Took slightly longer that the estimated 40 mins - I took my time, and had to keep finding the right spanners (mine are a little bit mixed up!).
I also had to double check what the brushes actually looked like! Especially when I saw the state of the current brushes -
Image

I didn't recognise the brushes as they were so worn!!!

I've changed them through 180 degrees, whilst I've ordered some more (only £12 from Ebay) as per Stigter's last post.

The only awkward bit?

Getting past the airbags (twitching sherrif's badge with this one!! :D)

BUT - the sense of satisfaction, knowing that it's now sorted and working properly is great!! :D

Many thanks to all who've contributed :)

Right - Update. My Aircon has been bust since buying it. Unit displayed 20.1 as a fault code. Replaced the climate panel and resolved the fault.
Just in time for summer too. Result.

I seem to be having worse luck. Got back from a deployment to find my fan not working at all. Finally pulled it out today and bought a 2nd hand one from All Audi in Bristol. Was stoked... it worked at theirs... fitted to mine and NOTHIN!!! GUTTED.
I hooked up the connections to the glove box light and turned the control up and down... as u would expect the bulb changed brightness to replicate the voltage thru the terminals- happy with that. Checked the codes and all is coming up normal.
So the switch and resistor works, the fan works when no in the car....... Where's the problem? Its doin my head in!!!

Ideas anyone?

Just thinking as there where two fans listed - aircon / non aircon.
See if you can check the part numbers - I replaced my fan from GSF for about £60 for a new oem one.

hook it up to 12v and see if it spins , be very carefull tho it kicks off pretty violently .If not sound like a faulty fan, i had the same problem and when it did work it was very noisy too

I made sure I got the A/c version.... not always a guarantee as they possibly look similar....
Quoted a new one from Yeovil Audi at £264!!!! Glad I didn't take that option only to b disappointed.
Funny thing happened when I removed the original earlier..... I dislodged the connector n the fan jumped to life!! grinding the plastic on the connector as it did so....
Might have to get a multimeter on it to cross ref the voltages on the climate control.......

Ok- tried both fans on 12v and both working fine. Both have identical part numbers so happy there.
Diagnostic code 1 on the climate control panle shows 0
Just wrestled the resistor from its mounting but dunno how to diagnose it :S
Perplexing conundrum....
