WARNING: Cambelt Age!

I recently bought a 2000 S4 with 46k on the clock. It went in under warranty for what appeared to be a stuck thermostat (slow warm-up and temperature falling on the open road). However the technicians also found that the original cambelt (which I had asked to be changed with rollers water pump etc. at my own cost) was found to have stretched so much that the limit of travel on the hydraulic tensioner had been reached. Thus the belt was running loose and could have resulted in the obvious! It is possible that it was also not running the water pump properly as there is minimal circumferential contact between the belt and water pump pulley.

Hence I would strongly recommend age as a good reason to change the belt even if the vehicle has not covered 80k.

Good advise. Just has the cambelt done on my dads PD TDI. 5 years old but only done 22K mile and the belt was cracking. Age IS an important factor along with miles.

I think the specification is 80k miles of 5 years anyway!

So if you had bought it from a dealer and it was over 5 years old .. they should have done the work before you bought it.

if the car has been serviced at Audi will they have details of previous cam belt changes on their system or will I need to call the garage that did the services? I dont think its written in my log book!

The service schedule should be on the Audi system, so your current dealer should be able to tell you, although it may just say 1st AVS service, 2nd AVS service etc.

Just another thought to add...I'm sure I read somewhere that the RS4 cambelt should be changed every 40k miles-is that right Paul? If so, then those with moddified S4s especially with KO4s should be changing belts a lot sooner than 80k! If not then ignore this post please cos I might be misinformed...

Quite right - RS4's every 40k miles. That's quite a valid point about the highly modded S4's. Any owners of such cars care to chip in with their thoughts?

Looks a bit grim over there though Veni - everything seems to be called Turkmenbasy!!! What's all that about then?

Well Veni - for your cambelt change it depends on the age of your car - the Audi recommendation is either 80,000 miles or 5 years - whichever comes first...

Not too sure about this "Gimbster" bit though ... and "western gimp" could be construed as insulting ... however; having seen how bleak, and frankly downright odd, Turkmenistan is i think we can forgive you on this occassion ...

Veni,

80,000 miles = 120,000kms approx: 5 years in English is 5 years in Metric.

Western men get too much grief from their one woman and so tend not to have more...but there are a few exceptions.

You're great leader ought to watch out, cos there is a Billionaire in London who is trying to have Putin chucked out...you're man may need new friends!

Hi Veni,

As I can't speak or write Tukmeni wotsit, I will have to do the time honoured English thing AND SHOUT. UK WOMEN AND LAW ONLY LET US HAVE ONE WIFE. WE CAN HAVE "WOMEN ON THE SIDE" BUT IF THE WIFE FINDS OUT SHE'LL HAVE OUR BALLS ON A PLATE IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE AND TAKE OUR HOMES AND KIDS AWAY  , AS LONG AS THEY LEAVE THE RS4 I DON'T CARE .
