Interesting weight comparison MCB, was thinking along similar lines myself. It's not THAT heavy.

Another weight comparison: BMW M3 (E46) is 1370kg according to a web source I just dug up

Different transmission layout but definitely a "competitor" of the S4B5.

M3 is obviously 2wd, wonder how much extra weight quattro adds to the S4?

I know a 996 C4 is 60kg heavier than the same 2wd version for example.

MCB, I think you are taking things a little too seriously on this one mate
No sense of humour loss here Mate.
an S4 is a high end performance estate car.
Some people just don't know when to quit!

No it isn't and maybe we will finally get a retraction from 'Lardy barge' boy?

Four pot rear wheel drive, hardly an accurate comparison!

Are you referring to the 4 pot brake callipers?

E46 is 3246cc with a straight 6 engine configuration.

MCB, you are becoming amusing on this, amazed it has annoyed you so much especially after I went to the trouble to qualify my initial remark in the context of track usage.

Have you ever driven one of the responsive lightweight saloon versions for comparison purposes? :D

1. It a comparison if you are looking to buy a small-ish family saloon which is pretty quick. Limit yourself to comparing the S4 to 4-wheel drive cars and you won't have much of a comparison.

2. I admitted the difference between the two cars in my post

Edited to remove "unhelpful" comment.

Stand corrected on that one, getting mixed up with the original.

Not annoyed bye the way just disagree with your ‘Lardy barge’ description and for giving the impression to other forum members that our cars are unduly heavy.

You are taking a paricularly obnoxious stance to this "debate". Did someone get out of bed the wrong side today
Apologies if I am giving that impression!

I am more than prepared to bow out of this thread, I think I have probably over stressed my point anyway.

This got me thinking that the E46 CSL version is supposed to be the light version, carbon roof etc......I know they weigh 1385kg and 1360 without a/c.

According to this months evo an E46 M3 weighs in at 1570kg, we have to consider that the E46 is effectively the model after the B5 for comparison purposes.

A B7 RS4 is 1650kg,
over the last few years there have definitely been a trend for cars to get slightly larger in their class weighing more with extra safety features added.

I think the decisive score in the voting of this poll, has shown most forum members have already drawn their own conclusion :D

The site I quoted did look a bit unreliable, to be honest! And there is always the issue of comparing dry and wet weights, fully spec'ed vs no extra options.

Doesn't look like there is too much in it either way.

Perhaps it is just that the S4B5 "feels" heavier to drive thanks to 4wd, front-ward positioning of engine etc?

I bought my car for practicality, some performance, comfort and build quality and price. If I wanted an ultra light track car, I would go for an elise, ariel atom, caterham etc. the fact is there isnt a car equally at home on track and road, even the ultra expensive lambos and porsches etc are better at one than the other.

S4 is pretty good at what it is designed for, safe, comfortable fairly cheap and reasonably fast motoring within a budget. fairly heavy yes, but there are heavier comparable cars such as V70R (cant think of anymore with 4WD, estate & saloon options, and similar price)

couldnt see appropriate option to vote, so I didnt

The S4 is no barge, its a bloody lightweight! I swapped it for an E39 M5 and THAT is a freekin lardy barge at a heavyweight 1756kg. Thats got to be around 190kg heavier (and it feels like it as well much more "bargy" than the S4). Go try and bench press 190kg next time you are at the gym and then your arms will know just how "unbargy" the S4 is.
