Hope it's not the dreaded/expensive Exhaust manifold rattle as often discussed on here.
Think you should start by reading this post....... http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... old+rattle

Well, wasnt going to go all out and spill the beans, but thats the *same car* (ie, I bought it). Its been driven with the rattle described there for 8kish miles (since Feb), then it was sold (to me). Various people (Audi Specialists and some forums members) have seen it and all pointed at different things.

Inititally it was billed as a precat rattle..

Gutted the precat on Sunday, rattle remains further up the chain so to speak, which is the turbo and exhaust manifold..
After gutting the pre-cat, noise is substantially worse, likely due to increased airflow.

Matt, how long did it take you to gut the pre-cats ? did you use a lift did you drill out the cats or what?
Re the rattle place a long screwdriver where the manifold meets turbo and get someone to activate the throttle to get the noise it will be apparent if it is from that area.

To get the precats out we put the car up on a electric lift ramp and took out the downpipes from underneath. We need the car up that high (shoulder height) to actually get enough clearance to "bend" them out. The pre-cat was very tough, used several different wood bits to tear it up and an Auger bit.. and a hammer, some screw drivers, pliers etc! Once you make a hole through it, you can start pulling larger lumps out.

On the manifold test you mentioned.. I assume you are just using the Screwdriver to pick up the vibration? We kinda did that, oddly the noise really did appear to be from the precat, but clearly that was wrong. Only thing left is the turbo and the manifold. One would imagine if the turbo was making that noise there would be other symptoms too!

Anyone got any pics or info on the best way to find and test if the Turbo Heatshield (drivers side) is causing the Rattle? The service history already stated it was repaired for causing a rattle (bolts came loose), its either the heatshield or the manifold at this point.

Matt, you could try taking it off? this would then eliminate the problem, only small bolts holding it in.

Now that I think of it, may have had it off when removing the precat. Its bizarre, the noise sounds like its just after the turbo.. could just be the sound traveling with the exhaust of course.. One last look this weekend then!

Matt need not take it off just stick a sturdy heat proof glove on get someone to use the throttle to bring the rattle on and get hold of the heatshields to find out.
Cheers Jim.

From my poking around today (using end of screwdriver), the rattle appears to come from under the turbo Heatshield (not the HS itself). The rattle is perhaps coming from the tip of the exhaust manifold exit or entrance to the turbo. I took the Airbox out to get down there from the top.

Any one that had the exhaust manifold issue specifically and would care to comment!?

Also, I have new Turbos and Manifolds sourced, so perhaps it would be possible to take some liberties with the flakey manifold thats installed..

Someone has suggested drilling a hole in the side and dropping some sealant in to "grab hold" of the liner. If it didnt work, I would very likely be down a Turbo, but since I (will) have a spare and the manifold has to be replaced anyway, maybe its worth trying? Is anything else really in danger from material floating around the exhaust/turbo?

Its gonna be your manifold, i have a shot n/s manifold, run it for nearly 20k, symptoms are as you described...
i just put my foot down or turned up the sounds, got used to it, other noises overtook that sound when really hot .... so its in for some work ... including some decent manifolds .... up the road in banbury .. :jump:

Manifold,Kies4 had his cats ruined when the manifold let go which in turn knackered the turbo which sent bits into his cats.
