yep i can achieve 30mpg if i stay around 70mph on the motorway, but commuting will see around 21mpg.. depends how your driving but like zerok66 and jonnyx say you could be running lean which long term is not good on the engine though it will look good on the mpg in this state

Surely a well set up standard car should return 28/30 mpg if driven gently.

The physics of the situation is that it is a 1500kg car being pushed along by a petrol engine.

Only heavy acceleration or a particularly inefficient engine (set up?) will give poor economy?

audi v6 seems to be thirsty even NA return 22-24mpg in stop start traffic.. but your right at a consistent speed the engine does not work and 30mpg is possible.. i think the car is more like 1650kg kerb weight? easily over 1800kg with passengers and luggage

get the car up to MRC as I did today! an engine check with the experts is well worth the peice of mind even if there is nothing wrong! I also ha my avant for 1 week, but I was sure there was something wrong (could average 31MPG on a long run)

Results : one dead MAF
Two dead DVs

and it turns out that the car has covered 94k on the same MAF having been serviced by audi all its life! I was actually lucky the DVs were dead too so not so much air was being pushed into the engine and hence it wasnt running quite as lean as it could have been or my sensors inthe exhaust would also be dead :-(

oh, by the way my car is completely standard, and on the way back from the health check I averaged 29.9MPG driving like a saint after a couple of spirited runs. mostly motorway, and was using super unleaded which definately makes a difference to the fuel economy.

nothing necessarily bad about 30mpg. I did a trip to NW Scotland (Ullapool) from Cardiff at an average speed very close to the speed limit and got 33mpg. My car is fine, having been fitted with new MAF, new 710Ns and a new lambda probe a couple of months back back the Gods at MRC. Would have been a higher mpg incidentally, but my girlfriend was also driving some of the motorway stuff and she's not good at maintaining a constant speed, even when using cruise control.

However, once we got up to the twisties in scotland, the mpg was a different story altogether

I would go to MRC, but I live in north scotland so its a bit far to travel. How much is a new maf (and part No)? and I may replace it anyway to be on the safe side.

Hi Daz, i have been in a couple of mates cars that have wired in their raidar detectors directly above the mirror so not to block any view! just a thought? also you can buy them that clip onto the mirror surround so just wondered if they have put a 12v feed from the ignition to power it? get a volt meter and see if you get 12v with ignition on? could be talking crap but thought i would mention it!
