Update -

I called in at the local Stealers at lunchtime, the parts chap came out and took a look to make sure he was giving me the right coolant sensor. Unclipped the connector from the top and the top of the sensor was full of what looked like brake fluid! (did have the brake fluid changed fairly recently when the rear discs and pads were done, maybe they spilt some when filling it up?) I've now dried and cleaned the connectors and will see if this resolves it or the sensor is permanently damaged.

As a side note, I plugged the Vagcom in before starting the car to see what the sensor was reading at cold (before discovering the above) and it was fluctuating between -3 and -15C, which probably explains why it's struggling to start when the ambient temp is +11C.

cheers

Rich

Ok, Was still having problems having cleaned up the sensor, so down to the Stealer for a replacement.

Here are the part numbers in case it helps someone:

A059 919 501 - Coolant Temp Sensor (22+Vat)
AN 903 168 - O-Ring (0.87+Vat)
A032 121 142 - Plastic Spring Clip (0.36+Vat)

The new sensor has a dark green top, where as the old one was pale blue.

Not had chance to re-test with VAGCOM yet so will report back if all is well now.

Cheers

Rich
