havent read all the posts in this thread, but a little white gunk does not mean the head gasket has gone.
I didnt use my golf vr6 for a few months and when i returned I found white gunk on the oil cap. I was told this was normal (condensation), and upon driving it regulary again it disappeared.
just my own personal experience.........

Thanks Olly K... A good mate of mine who is an experienced mechanic looked at the car today and said the same thing. There is only a tiny bit of white film on the smallest part of the cap, this disappears after a bit of running after the engine warms up, there will always be a bit of moisture which reacts with any oil on the cap/top of oil indicator on dipstick. He said to get an emissions check on the catalytic converter which should show up engine problems on a modern S4 engine.
