I am curious to know what the symptoms are? Major oil leak or small?

Freaky,

Your name is Gav and so is mine.

I had major oil leak which turned out to be a crank shaft oil seal. (I gather this is the same thing)

Rather than take the car to Audi I had it dont at my local VW Dealer (they used to be VW/Audi). I just pulled out the receipt.

The Seal was £13.83 +VAT and labour was £ 220 + Vat so total £275

The oil leak started off fairly small then when I pulled into a petrol station after about 1000 miles the car was smoking like it was on fire! But oil was just sprayed on the hot exhaust......
