C/locking & E/windows stopped working?

Post by Scotty306 » Wed Oct 05, 2005 1:50 pm

I think i've got a problem with the drivers door electrics.

every now and then i find that the central locking & electric windows stop working.

When it happens the locks wont operate with the fob and with the key it's very heavy and just does the one door.
Also none of the windows will move using any of the buttons.
The door mirrors always work though?

Then suddenly all will be ok again, which makes me think it's linked to movement in the drivers door (perhaps a short or a break in a cable?)

It's started happening more frequently now and I can't really risk leaving an S4 unlocked!

Hopefully someone's got some ideas so i can isolate the fault and fix it on the cheap :(

I'm no expert around this but I'd go for an earth. Best to wait until it fails completely if so, but be very careful when using the car....

Luckily the doors will lock by manualy pushing the door pins down,
but there's an unhealthy resistance when i do this and i'd rather not cause any more damage!

Unfortunately there's no way of manualy lifting the windows! so they're staying firmly shut 'til i cure the fault

managed to get fault codes read?

there have been problems with "comfort module" (!) in drivers door, connections etc, but usually this opens all the windows sometime after you have left the car, cure, fix connection/replace unit £100, might be worth looking at connections into it. who puts something like that inside a door???

I've also just noticed that the interior lights & door lights don't come on any more!
although the dash will light up to show the mileage each time any of the doors are opened.

Sounds like the central locking pump unit in the boot. This controls the windows, key functions and the central locking.

The unit often fails due to water leaks from the o/s rear lamp, replacements are around £250 from your dealer.

You appear to have a few engine related issues as well......those faults will keep you busy for a while....

are these new fault codes? the dealers simply wipe them and see if they recur after a short drive.

It's the first time i've hooked up the vag com so hopefully they will go away for a while!

As for the locks & Windows fault, it's definately the cl pump in the boot.
(Good call philipwalker)
After a 'wiggle' on the cable connector the problem has gone away.
I guess it's down to me trying to store too much of my junk in there with it.

At least if it happens again i know where to look, suppose i might have to re-make the plug one day.
