Its a common problem. There is company in Calne, Wiltshire (someone electronics). They do repairs for about £50-60. They have to replace the chip board on the ECU and they wipe the security code and give you a new one but the unit comes back brand new....saved me...

how can you tell the difference dont they have the same face?teknobod wrote:It's a common problem, but only affects the Blaupunkt head units.
You can buy the head units on Ebay, but if you do, I would try and purchase the Panasonic type as people will try to sell the faulty Blaupunkt head units and hide the fact that they are faulty. (Crooks on Ebay - surely not !)

Is there a sticker or part number to check for?
Be careful out there or your arse may be sorry.
I've just quickly found a website that gives the following info:-
AUDI CONCERT AUZ2Z3 4B0 035 186G GRUNDIG
AUDI CONCERT AUZ5Z3 4B0 035 186B PANASONIC CQ-LA1621L
AUDI CONCERT M4 AUZ1Z3 4B0 035 186C BLAUPUNKT
AUDI CONCERT NAV AUZ1Z3 4B0 035 186B BLAUPUNKT
AUDI CONCERT PLUS AUZ1Z3 4B0 035 186E BLAUPUNKT
I think the underlined numbers in italics are the ones to look for and should be on a label on the r/h side as you look at the front.
Another site which is quite useful for id numbers is:-

Hope this helps

Mine has started waking up my next door neighbour in a cold morning!
Serves him right for banging doors in the middle of the night! (Semi-detached house)
Will vag-com do anything for it or will I need to send it to be repaired as Tartan Rob has done?
Is there a time limit in the morning before I should touch the volume on a cold morning?

Unfortunately, the fault will occur again, but probably not while you still own the car.Tartan_Rob wrote:When the unit is warm it is less tempramental. I thik the revised control unit fitted by OE Electronics is revised and this fault is unlikely to occur.
Apparently, the fault is due to the fact that the RAM used for the volume control data can only be overwritten a finite number of times, and because it is integral to the microprocessor, the MPU has to be changed which means that the code usually changes and the whole tuner/rf settings have to be reprogrammed.
However, at some point in the future the internal RAM will again fail. It will last longer if you don't play with the volume too much though!!
