Anyvay, onlee ze Germans vould set a spid limit ov 262.017km/h.

Paul
I think its more because 250 km/h is a round number :)

Top gear did the GATSO thing, I think it was over 170 MPH to stop it going off, but that was just one run at that speed, I think some luck may have been involved.. anyway, I ain't gonna try it! Don't fancy being on the front page of all UK Papers

Speeding

Mind you, did you read the story about the Porsche driver who got off after clocking 173mph (would have been the fastest speeding conviction in the UK). A technicality meant that the police had no evidence...

The old bill couldn't keep up with him (big surprise there) and lost sight of the car for a short while. The Porsche was parked up further up the road and the driver accepted the ticket. Apparently the lack of evidence bit arises cos they didn't have the car/driver in their sights all the time prior to issuing the ticket.

Moral of the story? Well, probably several actually...
Don't get caught
Outrun them
Get a decent solicitor.

By law, any german car is supposed to be limited to 250 km/h, which is a round number. However, ever since the RS2 (first Audi to be top-speed limited apart from the american 100 S4's which were limited to 210km/h because of the potential use of snow tyres by some idiots that could have killed them), Audi have almost always limited their cars to 262km/h instead of 250....

The funniest thing ever is the 2003 Audi S3 and Seat Leon Cupra R's, the ECU's top speed limiter is set to FFFF, which equates to 512 km/h

The speed the ECU reads is the same speed as VAG-Com or the climate control read, and it is very very close to GPS speed.

Mihnea,

Is there any way to correct the ECU speed for a different rolling circumference? I'm guessing it is a constant programmed into the ECU for the speed calculation?

K, the speed the ECU sees comes from the speed sensor on the gearbox. I have never tried to play with those settings, but I know some people can play with the speedo's settings to get them to display speed accurately... I'll look into it if you want me to, although I have no clue yet how this can be done...

to avoid getting photographed by a fixed radar camera, one has to be travelling at 296 kph or greater.

really and truly its a Green thing - and Porsche is exempt

RS4 has additional bracing in the doors to to help reduce window lifting and wind noise at very high speeds.
Same with the front bumper for rigidity.

There is some bad info in this thread.

As previously stated, there are a few US owners who have raced the Salt Flats. One in particular only has an "off the shelf" Stage 3 kit and a taller diesel 6th gear. He has hit an averaged time of about 190 mph though the traps. There weren't any reported stability problems. With more road (you only get a few miles in Bonneville), he probably would have been able to approach 200 mph. With correct gearing, 500 bhp would be enough.

I've had my speedo needle burried a few times on the Autobahn. The car is stable at 175+ mph.
