With the gearing on the box on S4 and RS4 you will only see about 185 max and you will be into the red line.I believe 3rd 4th 5 th and 6th gears are the same in the boxes only 1st and 2nd are different. could be wrong.

If you fit 23" wheels you should be OK ... LOL

Or 225/105/17 rubber? might be a bit of rubbing on tight corners though...you'd have to roll the arches obviously.

Right, all being that I manage to stay alive I will report back the max speed (speedo & GPS) ... then the next step may be to the gearing changing changed.

If I get 6th changed ... that just means more HP/torque to get the top end sorted out?

if taking a long term strategic view rather than dealing with each step individually, a worthwhile alternative is to make the engine reliable at a higher red line. It is always a good idea to ensure that the gearbox and differentials receive better cooling too. And an alternative to swaping geat ratios might be to change the final drive ratio.

Just to sidetrack a little... Would adding an M3 lip spolier help overall stability when the S4 is run at such high speeds? or does it not do much beyond enhacing aesthetics?

I've had clock reading of 180mph out of my RS4 running Revo's trial software. I can't remember what the revs were. It got to that speed from about 70mph in I'm guessing less than a 1.5miles nd felt ok. But feck were the brakes useless at stopping from that speed. I generated heat spots on the fronts but then the pads were pretty knackered despite having easily 7mm left on them. I didn't realise just how knackered they were until I put new standard pads on. What a difference. But the car felt perfectly stable at that speed.

I read an Audi Driver article on the RS4 last year that stated with the standard wheels, gear ratio and rev limiter the car was only capable of a true 185mph I think. I'll dig out the article sometime.

as the speed doubles the brake effort goes up by the square of the increase!

5h Gear VMAX

Post by derdle » Thu Apr 14, 2005 1:13 pm

Hi,

Saw the 5th Gear bit - but they reckon about 600bhp should be enough to crack 200mph....so to get the Lotus up to that power output I would imagine a Nitrous kit will be needed. But, I'm sure it will be a case of 0-200mph....once.

Am I right in asuming a '98 S4 to be limited to 155mph?

Has anyone maxed out their car in standard form?

The electronic top speed limiter on an S4 is 262.017km/h or 163.76mph. I have hit it the first day I had my '98 S4 :D

Why is it limited to that speed?
Was that speed with a GPS?

I mean why 262.017km/h or 163.76mph? It's not exactly a round number! I thuohgt all german cars were limited to 155mph?

Speed limited

Post by derdle » Fri Apr 15, 2005 2:24 pm

I thought it was 155mph cos that 's the maximum speed that a Gatso can clock.

Anyvay, onlee ze Germans vould set a spid limit ov 262.017km/h.
