Fuel reading on DIS

Post by S4driver » Sat Feb 12, 2005 9:59 pm

Can anyone explain how the fuel reading is calculated on the DIS  Is it a economy style reading.....
I have ,lets say, 200 miles showing on the display and this will equate on the fuel gauge between half and three quarters showing.
Now if i am driving casually, say 80'ish on the motorway the reading will stay the same. If i accelerate/go quicker it will go down, but if i get back down to 80 or slower it will go back up, even telling me i have more than the 200.....
I also notice that the DIS reading seems to correct itself after turning the engine/ignition off. I can use the car on a 20 minute journey and the fuel reading will not go down that much. However when starting the car up again it can be upto 50 miles lower.....

On my RS2, the fuel display on the DIS would show you how many miles you had left in the tank and, like the S4, it would go down, and go down quickly if you "drove" it, but it would never go up. If you put it on ave MPG it would return around 22, but when giving it any would go down to 6 or 7.....

Or does it sound as though something is faulty?

Mine is the same, it tends to lag the average reading. so gentle driving it will go back up, give it some beans and it falls rapidly

As far as re-setting when turning on the ignition, don't forget that it has to take into account the average reading at that time, so low average speed and higher fuelling as the car is warming up will give a lower miles to go reading, after the car is warm it comes back to about it's previous reading on mine.

It tells you in the drivers manual, I think it's based on your last average consumption over the last x kilometres (I want to say 100 but havn't got my manual to hand).

It's a rolling average and so when you start the car again, it will be rapidly skewed by a 'stationary' driving.

If you have VAG-COM and want to improve accuracy, see this thread:
