buying an S4

Post by v3n » Fri Jul 30, 2004 3:35 pm

Hi guys

Just wanted some advice on buying a bi-turbo S4

I'm not too far from Fontain and have been checking out their web site.

One of the cars has really caught my eye with its silver recaros but its done 73k and its a W 2000 car

Biggest concern i have at the moment is re-sale value. If i keep it for say 2 years it'll be 90K+

Any comments or other good audi independent dealer web sites would be appreciated

It certainly looks like a nice car! Those Recaro's are great too, thats the same as my interior. The support on the Recaro's are much better than the standard leather seats.

One thing to bear in mind is that the car will be due a cambelt change at 80k, so if fontain will do it before they sell you the car, I cant see you will have much problem with the car itself.

It would interesting to find out the kind of millage the other silver S4 fontain have has on the cloock. as this will give you and idea of how much to take of your car once its done a similar millage.

http://www.croftmotors.co.uk/ are another good place to check out, although they seem to only have Avants at the moment!!

Check out the S4 buyer's guide on this website. It is under downloads, then S4 (B5), then Docs.

IMHO in 2 years time, the car will be 6+ years old - therefore that sort of mileage seems acceptable (perhaps not for an RS4). The most important thing is to check receipts, service bills, and the overall condition of the car etc... I can't see it reflecting values too much - you should be negotiating with Fontain about the mileage in your favour ;-)

Just make sure they have carried out the cambelt - check for turbo replacement - check for suspension wear.

Nige.

I wouldn't worry about 73k being on the clock. My 99 T's on over 140,000, the only problems I've had have been leaking rear diff seals (twice, once repaired under warranty, the second time at about 110,000), a faulty driver's side wheel bearing and a leaking water pump (failed only very recently, which I replaced combined with a cam belt change which is due at 160,000 anyway). To be honest, apart from regular servicing and maybe the odd brake pad change, I don't think I spent a penny on the car between 70 and 90k, so you shouldn't have any problems, but as others have mentioned, it'd be well worth getting Fontain to agree to a cam belt service. And if you do buy the car, NEVER put the turbos under any stress 'til the oil's warmed up. Mine still feels as powerful as the day I bought it (3 years ago with 22k on the clock), not a trace of blue smoke and I never have to top up the oil between services

To give you a rough idea, a 99 T, 90k miles, in excellent nick, books currently at about £7800. So a car a year younger but 2 plates up in 2 years time would be maybe booking at £6500?? Private sale £8000-ish...?

I paid £12,500 for a feb 99 S with 67k, cambelt+water pump done and new central locking pump fitted. I phoned up about the fontain motors s4 that was about £13k and the miles were about 113k i think!

Just need to get new brakes pretty soon.

You obviously haven't been into your local Audi stealer recently....
