High end power and speed.

Post by DrB » Mon Jul 19, 2004 4:42 pm

Of coarse in this country it is illegal to drive faster than 70mph. However when the chance occurs to drive faster (of course it would be a safe and legal situation!), what are peoples experience of the S4s accelaration above 100mph (with the standard engine)?

I have found that the accelaration is reasonable up to 120mph, but above that it takes a considerable time to progress. Above 150mph, it seems to take an age.

When in a situation with an M3 I found that up to 100 - 110 mph there probably was not much difference, but the M3 definately increased in speed quicker above 100mph.

I am thinking of changing the ECU and CATS/downpipes, and I feel more sure about doing this since my recent experience - Has anyone who has made the change noticed an improvement in top end accelaration?

Having just returned from Le Continent I can make the following observations.

Stock program - 130 is easy, 140 starting to struggle and 150+ requires a very long strech of road.

APR map (331bhp (+/-AmDs dubious rolling road figures)) 150 easy, 160 slowing and much above 160 requiring the long road stretch. V max for our trip was 173mph (which is amusing as it is off the clock) and was confirmed by GPS to be 169mph  I ran out of road, but doubt that the car would go any faster.

How stable did the car feel that those sort of speeds, and what was the wind noise like ?

I've had my APR S3 upto 163 mph on the clock, but the revs stopped sharply at 6,500 rpm, suspect 155 mph speed limiter.

It felt really stable and the wind noise was miminal.

Brakes scrubbed speed of no problems, but would imagine a complete high speed stop would finish them off !!

I would agree with David on the AMD remap. Unfortunately my old S4 never ran properly for the first 8 months until AMD fixed the faulty exhaust temp probe and the burst TBB, then went onto remap. The remaped car destroys a M3 is terms of torque 275? vs 380ftlbs. Even my stock RS4 doesn't compete with the torque of my last S4 (320ftlbs stock for RS). I really have to rev the RS.

Because of the limited volumetric capacity of the K03s there was little point in changing down a gear in the chipped S4 you just pushed the pedal to the floor in 6th and watched the needle climb at an impressive rate all the way to 140mph quite easily. The best I had was 167mph on not that long a road. It would definitely do 170mph. I see your in ABZ. I'll email you a safe - ish bench mark for our area to see if your car is ok.

I wish I could join in with this discussion but I value my license too much!
