Dream Fulfilled- New S4 biturbo Owner

Post by S4-RED » Sat Jul 03, 2004 3:00 pm

Hello All,

After many years of being out there in the wilderness, I finally have the opportunity to buy a 98 S4 biturbo. I cant wait to get her as Ive just laid a deposit down. Shes in Red and in mint condition considering she has 109K on the clock.

The Engine sounds wonderful, the bodywork is great and so is the interior, however one thing is bugging me. This is where I need your help. When I turn off the ignition I get a little clattering noise, it last about 1-2 secs top. I only get it when I turn the ignition off , and not vice versa. Ive had a friend look at it and he has said its not the bottom engine or the engine itself, because it is super creamy on startup from cold.

The only thing that may be linked with it is there is some oil leak from the bottom of the gearbox, and also on the rear driveshafts.

Its something that I would want to sort out. So in your years of ownership of these machines have you any ideas or suggestion of what it could be?

It's usual for the 2.7t engine to make a bit of a noise on shutdown - whether it's for 2 secs I'm not sure...

Mine, does the same, I dont think its anything to worry about.

I think its to do with the viscos (is that spelt right) fan on the radiator, as the engine stops I think the clutch mechanism in the fan just makes a noise as it slows against the stopping engine....

I could be wrong......

Well done on getting an S4, looks like everyone's been out buying them this weekend!

I think it's the dual mass flywheel. As for your oil leaks, get your rear diff seals, rear
main seal, and upper sump gasket checked out. Nothing is cheap to fix on the
S4 unless you are prepared to have a go yourself.

Good luck!

Can you isolate when the noise on shutdown is coming from? i.e. the front or back of the engine?

Clattering Noise

Post by S4-RED » Mon Jul 05, 2004 8:18 pm

Guys....

Your feedback is very warming...the noise is comming from about mid section, ie the transmission area. If I depress the clutch or hold the gear stick to the left the noise is much less dramatic...

It may well be the clutch as it comes in so many pieces, and at 109K there will be a little rattle hear or there. The oil leaks Im getting sorted by the dealer, and ive got him to look into the noise, it only last 1 second approx, and is the last thing you hear when the engine is turned off. Not noticeable when your in the car, but I want my baby to be in tip top nick...for the first time in my like Im really proud that ive got her. :) ...btw she is loved more than the wife!
