With my 1.8 Audi "East Kent Audi" quoted me £450 for the cambelt service. I then went to "St Georges VW" (they used to be VW/Audi until Audi went upmarket) they did the cambelt service for £340, now there used to working on this engine as its in the passat.
My question is, do I trust them to do the same with my S4. They have always been good to me. Airbag light came on in the A4, East Kent Audi said I need a new ignitor for £300, St Georges said this is a known fault and they cleaned up the connections and reset the fault and it was fine. Cost me nothing as they did it as part of the service.
I phoned them about a price for the S4 cambelt service and they guy recond to budget upto £400..... so do I go with them, or get ripped of by East Kent Audi.....
VW never had the 2.7 Lump did they? and does anyone know if the 2.8 lump in the passat was it the VR6 engine or the same as the A4, if they have done them then I might be a little more relaxed.
Sorry for the long post

It's your call really mate but why not call around your local Audi dealers? As I said earlier, Harold Wood are doing mine for £485 and they are not a million miles away. In theory you would have more recourse from an Audi dealer if something went wrong (I did say in theory).
Also QST can't be far from you and I bet Kim has changed more than the odd few cambelts in his time on the 2.7 Bi. As I am still under warranty I "can't" use independants for these jobs.
Cheers
Ben

Gavin,
Just had my cambelt changed on my S4 by QST a month or so ago. I got them to do it approaching 60k miles as I don't know the history of the car and it may have had a hard life (the RS4 recommends them at 40k) and I wanted to be safe.
You need to get them to change the cam belt tensioner at the same time as a preventative measure, but Kim will tell you all this.
I think they quoted me £530ish for the job all in, as opposed to £700+ from the Audi dealer. However, Kim found a number of things that needed fixing when he went through the car so if Audi had had their hands on it, it would have cost me an awful lot more than it did.
Incidentally, they did a great job on the car and its never run as well since I've had it!
I'm just a customer but they get my vote, but then the dealers get my vote to be avoided at all costs - they're muppets (in my experience!).

According to the Official Audi Erwin manual replace the following every 120,000km which worked out exactly is 75K miles:
Toothed belt, tensioning roller, idler wheel, and tensioning lever for camshaft drive.
Some folks opt to change the water pump while the front end of the car is off. Not sure how much that costs but its ceratinly worth pricing.
My recent cam belt change on my RS4 cost me £125 for parts only since the engine was out for replacement turbos, CATs etc! So if that is any indication.
The entire front end of the car is removed. Don't worry it is designed that way but still takes a bit of time to disconnect quite a number of bits. So at £55+/hr + VAT for most dealerships. It only take 3.6 hours to mount up £275 worth of labour. Which incidentally is at the cheap end of the spectrum. I've heard of a few guys paying up to £800 when combined with a full service!
If you like your old garage. Ask them who is going to do it and ask to speak to the tech to establish if he has done this before and do they have the camshaft alignment tools and the service pins for removing the front end. All these things make life much easier for them and mitigate the risk of damaging your car. If they don't price around and get done elsewhere. But as always I'd still ask the same questions. There are a lot of muppets working even in decent dealerships. It's like anything, its all down to the tech working on your car nd there are good n bad no matter what their expereince is!
