what to do???

Post by giamoto » Thu Mar 11, 2004 10:33 am

got the S4 dilemma - basically keep it or change it - had the car since late 2000 (2nd owner at 13mths)and loved every minute of it especially since the upgrade however, starting to get itchy feet and have small shopping list(new 350z, 993 CS, RS4, CLIO V6) inc new S4 which I'm gonna test this Monday. Still not sure I'll actually be persuaded to change especially as i'm not sure how to value my car - I'd be grateful for any feedback on both my shopping list and also what I should be expecting private versus trade (car has 43k is A1 condition with full supplying dealer history and just serviced 2wks ago)...........Simon

If you sell the car privately or trade it in you may loose quite a lot of the extra you've spent on it. A lot of modified car owners put their cars on Ebay Motors as it seems to attract those types of buyers, who are actually interested in the mods...

as long as it doesn't look like this...

Trade value at the main dealer will be about £12500-13000 depening upon what you are trading up to.

I had this 'dilemma' last year and as a result test drove two RS4's - one standard as far as the Dealer knew and one modified. Although the Dealer's one had an iffy clutch (which was about to be replaced) I was actually disappointed with how similar (ride/sound/handling etc) in everyday town driving it was with one exception - lots of lag! No doubt the RS4 is an awesome car and if I lived further in the country and had a labrador, I would like one.
I then accepted that my S4 (similar spec & miles as yours) was, for the money, a super daily driver with loads of usable low-down torque and the extra GBP20K to trade up was not really worth it to then drive along the A and B roads to work each day.
The result: A 993C4 for track days and w/ends.
Best of both worlds I feel.
There, that'll get the RS4 Forum going!

thanks for the feedback - like the idea of keeping it and getting a weekend/trackday car however my problem is that I couldn't justify anymore toys to 'she who must be obeyed' - therefore its gotta be just the one.....price wise trade in I am seeing this sort of price with 12-13k quoted against a nice low mileage 993....have to see what happens Monday with the new S4!! Any ideas as to what I should ask privately???? Simon

I would certainly go with the RS 4 since using the 993 on a daily basis can be anoying, especially if you carry stuf and like to travel with the car. And then, the RS 4 would still be faster than a 993.
I would say, search for this car not only in England, but in other European countries, as Spain and France...
Try to get a low milleage one. I´ve just missed a 13 000 KM one, silver, totally stock.
Good place to start is the web.

Good luck on your search.

Having just been through a similar dilema I went for the RS4. I'm personally amazed at the difference between my S4 and new RS4...totally different in my opinion.

On my first RS4 testdrive I was kinda hoping they wouldn't feel that much different, cos then I could have just stuck with my S4, which was a fantastic car.

I thought of modding...but eventually I decided I'd still look back and wish I'd got an RS4...it's not just the performance...the whole look of the car appeals to me...just a stunning looking car in my opinion.

993/M3 were potential options...but I like the fact that the majority of people don't know what the RS4 is...so ignore it (having said that, I get more looks than I thought I would...but they're more like "what is that?...not seen one of those before" - rather than "tosser/poser", which is what put me off the porsche/bmw.....the RS4 is exclusive, practical, damn fast with no stigma attached.

So...for me...

New S4 is very nice, suitably different to the B5 S4 to justify a change, unlike going from B5 S4 to RS4 IMO. I disliked the servotronic steering on the new S4 and relative lack of low-mid torque (the new A3 3.2 has a better low to mid torque) although I guess at 1700kg, the new 4.2 S4 has a lot of weight to haul about.

Retail price (recommended) for your car is between 15-16k

thanks again - I to considered an M3 as I did last time but once again they are just a little too boy racer and a little to common now though that said they are IMO a cracking drivers car with a superb engine.....big suprise for me has been the 350Z which I was able to get for a day and half test drive - thoughly charasmatic drive and due to its price (and the fact that supercharging/turbo options give circa 400bhp potential) still on the shopping list - only real issue here was the quality of the interior, good but by no means an Audi and the fact of who will be driving them in 2-3 years time i.e the boom-boom spoiler boys!! As I said I'll wait and see on the new S4 but the S/H 993 is still an option though again I do agree that its not got that Q car appeal of an RS4 and in the UK that brings the normal problems.....never driven an RS4 but love the looks, practicality and relative Q car apperance....finding a good un seems to be the problem at the right price and spec....

Thanks for the price info again David - if I do sell I'd be happy with offers around that level - I'll see how I go Monday and then might place an ad here with some piccies see if there's any interest...like to think it went to the right type of person!!!

how about an a6 2.7t.its the same engine as an s4(albeit in a lower state of tune)with a bit more room and extremely understated.and its available in tiptronic.

M3 A little too boy racer? - phew, thats a relief as I've only ever seen middle aged men with a mid life crisis driving them - including myself

No need to appologise. When Joshie downgraded from his S4 to an M3, he became an open target for insults. The trouble is it does take some effort to upset him...
