Novice Question?????????????

Post by adapssis » Wed Jan 21, 2004 10:42 am

What's the go with the stock S4 clutch, I just bought a standard 195kw S4 and being all wheel drive, I thought I could drop the clutch at about 5000rpm without much wheel spin, but all I got was the smell of a burning clutch and snail pace take off?????? mmmmm...nothing like the whiff of burnt clutch in the morning

I'm sure there is someone who'll answer this properly, but I'd guess that the clutch and perhaps the torque converter are taking the major strain off the 4wd system so things don't go snap. I have found that dropping carefully from about 3.5k generally has good results

On a dry road, with all that torque and power, inevitably something has to slip. In a FWD or RWD car, then often the wheels will slip, in the S4 when you are so staggeringly brutal to it, the clutch will slip (and especially when it is a little worn) before the tyres. Big starts like that are REALLY bad news for the transmission, be thankful that your clutch slipped - it is much cheaper than the input shaft of the gearbox breaking (as is known to happen on the s4/rs4 boxes) The S4 on a high traction surface has too much traction for the clutch and transmission components to cope. I can get away with that occasionally with the uprated clutch for the few 1/4 mile times I have done - but even then, I would use 3000rpm and a more gentle clutch release.

5000 rpm starts are bad news for S4's mate, with all that torque, hold it at about 3000 rpm and take it easy.

O and RS4 Clutch kits help if it dies.

Although the S4 and RS4 clutches use exactly the same parts, the only difference being the aggressiveness. An RS4 clutch will give more bite, but it'll die just as quickly.

5,000rpm starts are a no-go, unless it's seriously wet and slippery, when all that wheelspin can be fun. Try, like everyone else said, about 3,000rpm, giving it a bit of hassle, but then once the clutch is out you nail it
