Hi all
Long time VAG owner - I'm looking at buying a 2000 W plate S4 saloon I've seen advertised on Pistonheads. It's to be used as a 2nd car as we have an A6 3.0 Quattro wagon for carting stuff about in - so saloon is my preference for a change (have had 2 estates at once, but I digress!)
This one's pretty low mileage (53k) and appears very high spec - Recaro front (heated) and rear, TV/nav, BOSE, sunroof (boo!) - but is essentially standard/unmodified.
I'm waiting for the seller to come back to me on whether it's got ISOFIX child seat attachments (it was optional at that age, according to Audi) as we have a 3 month old son to cart about.
What's worrying me is the price - they're asking £7k, which based on some posts I've read on here is either bang on the money or way over the odds by up to £2k - doesn't help that these posts vary in age quite a bit! Apparently has FSH with Audi then a specialist, so that ticks the boxes. Also new tyres and brakes.
I suspect if all the history stacks up and there's nothing to spend on it then it's probably worth £6k at most? Apparently it was imported from Germany, but I'm guessing since it's RHD etc then it was when you could order a UK spec car in Germany and drive it home saving a few quid, but losing the factory warranty in the process, so not an issue 10 years down the line?
Any advice welcome - my mate who knows S/RS cars from working on them daily is currently on honeymoon, so not about to ask! He'll probably throttle me if I buy this without him seeing it first.....
Cheers
Adrian
Sorry to ask what's probably the most obvious question ever!
RE: Sorry to ask what
Hi Adrian - I'm new S4 ownership (about 4 weeks now) but did watch the market a fair bit before buying. I've just bought a very highly speced 2001 (X) avant with comparabvle history. It's got almost twice the milage of the one you're interested in but is really tidy (unlike some out there). I paid slightly more than I planned (£6750 from a dealer) but was simply happy with this one. Some of them with much lower milleage looked a mess in comparison. Some of them you can pick up (of this age) for below £5k - In my experience they're usually cheap for a reason.
I'd say if you have a mate who's an expert, wait untill he's back. It could be a very expensive mistake.
BTW mine doesn't have isofix

I've had my '99 S4 for a few months, I paid less than £5k for it, and had no real trouble so far. It's not mint, but has a full history and low mileage (80k) with a stage 1 tuning (remap + Miltek cat-back) It's a similar spec to what you are looking at less the nav/TV and heated seats. I wouldn't be too concered about whether it has Isofix as you can quite easily fit it yourself http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread ... ofix+guide for not too much.
As above though, If you can wait for someone who knows S/RS cars, then it might be best to wait.
