Potential S4 Avant owner

Post by kieron » Thu Nov 13, 2003 8:24 pm

hi all,

just joined this group because i'm in the process of sourcing an s4 avant. had a look at the sticky (eeuuuwww) buyers guide but it doesn't seem to indicate that theres that much to look for other than the throttle body boot. is that it? surely thats not the only known S4 problem is it?

with the throttle body boot has anyone fitted the APR bipipe kit ? if so does it eliminate the fault?

ideally i'd like a black s4 avant but they seem to be few and far between on the second hand market. were they not a popular colour?

cheers
Kieron

Hi Kieron. Welcome here
I have seen very few black, but there are a lot of Ming Blue.
APR bipipe solves the TBB problem nicely.

Just do a search for other problems. There is lots of info there.

APR bipipe solves the TBB problem nicely.

But expensively. I've not damaged a TBB (yet)...

A few days ago there were two black Avants on the autotrader site, can't remember if they were trade or private

Not that expensive compared to the cost of turbo replacement

Also in theory because it doesn't flex like the TBB and has enlarged DV ports, throttle response should theoretically be improved.

Warranty is a great thing.

I looked inside the APR bi-pipe, the finish of the metal is rough as hell - dissapointing for the cost. If it was finished to a higher standard then the cost would be justifiable IMO.

Mine ran out after the first year and besides I seem to have modified the car a bit anyway

Although I agree that the roughness is disappointing, considering the R&D that went into it for what must be a fairly low production run, the excellent kit of parts and installation manual, I think it's a fair price.

There again why am I bothering to discuss 'value for money' with a Scotsman?

Hehe! You can accuse me of being tight fisted, but don't accuse me of being Scottish!

Warranty isn't something that I'm overly concerned with as I'll almost certainly be speaking to Scott and Nathan at AmD, they did a lot for my current Corrado VR6 - in fact its my car on their website in the Corrado section, for a few tweaks and I can always buy a 3rd party warranty.

Thanks for the info guys - much appreciated!

well i went and had a look at an S4 at a garage that will remain nameless just north of basingstoke on the a33 to reading.

the car was a right state unfortunately. loads of scratches, especially around the boot area caused by dogs getting in and out. the leather was cracked and in worse condition than my '96 Corrado plus it had interstellar mileage.

the salesman was a right tw@t too! asked me to make an offer AND put down a deposit BEFORE arranging a test drive!!!!

thanks for the info and the buyers guides as it given me a bit to go on.

many thanks all!

Afternoon Kieron,

that permie life must be treating you well again

FYI Asim knows one of the sales people at that garage. Probably won't save you any money, but may get you a little edge on first look at another car.

I test drove a new S4 there with no trouble at all. Just turned up mid week, asked for a drive, and got it. Maybe you looked overdressed

So mate, which motor are you unloading - the VR or the G60 ??

Oh, and keep the 19th Dec free in your diary.
Its looking like it will be the East-Ender III that night

All the best,

Hello John!!!

Yeah permie life, though full of politics, is going well. Got my own team now! Hehe!

To be honest the S4 was in poor condition and nogaro blue just isn't me so I won't be going back for that one. If any of my Corrados are going it'll be the G60. I fell out of love with the VR6 for 2 days when the alarm fried but now thats been sorted and a new one fitted by Mr Bryantt I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I'll buy a bigger garage before I sell the VR6!!

Cheers
