Rattle from front of engine

Post by andybnwc » Sun Mar 08, 2009 6:29 pm

Been having a rattle noise when cold from the front of the engine , i replaced the serpentine tensioner after another noise . But after that another noise started. To check its not the timing belt tensioner or waterpump i decided to run without serpentine belt on to exclude this.

so today i pulled the serpentine belt off to day when cold and fired up , no noises at all . I have lightweight pulleys on . I manually turned alt, one fan and the bottom centre and bottom right all seem tight and spin freely . However the top one feels like a bit of play and makes a light knock when quickly turned left and right with fingers is this normal ?

Where did you get the LW pulleys from?

Put the Auxilliary belt back on and start engine when cold. Pour some water on the belt as it rides over the steering pump pulley wheel. See if that eradicates the noise!

Report back findings :bigblink:

WD40 should be OK. It's your pulley wheel for sure. Just had to take my pulleys off and replace with standard ones. Problem has gone. Mine were ESP wheels also. Did you buy them direct from ESP or through a dealer/agent?

It's always really bad first thing in the morning when cold?

The pulleys are shredding your auxiliary belt.

Got mine through Martin as well! Yes I have a video of how the issue was diagnosed. The noise has never come back. Also the Alternator wheel slips when the alternator is fully loaded.

Send me an email address and I'll send you a video tomorrow.

TYhe tensioner and alternator were changed on mine until the problem was indetified. The noise gets worse over time. Pour water on and see what happens. I put old pulley's back on!
