I did mine without using the audi tools because they weren't prepared to rent them to me, and I wasn't prepared to buy them! Didn't lock the crank or loosen the cam sprockets either - just carefully marked sprockets and belt with a permanent marker and then transferred the marks to the new belt. I also marked which edge faced forward and also made a double mark on one of the sprockets. I compared the length and number of teeth on both belts, and found them to be the same as close as I could measure. I turned the crankshaft through two full turns, and nothing collided, so I put it all back together. I have done 8k miles since then and the engine is running perfectly.

I didn't really trust audi to do the job because they failed to replace the water pump when the previous owner had the cambelt done at 80k (which then failed at 120k), which is unforgivable. I reasoned that independent garages aren't going to have the official tools anyway and probably just do what I did, so I decided to do it myself and the whole job cost me £150 in parts and a day's hard work. Maybe I just got lucky, but it can be done.
