Clean it.

Take it out, Get a brush, clean it with ispropyl soution, and then brush the unit on the car to that the ashtray sits in. Clean all the dust and any gunge that may be stoping it from sliding it and out, then put it together then all should be fine.

IF that doesnt work then try someone elses ashtray and see if the same thing happens. Make sure there ashtray works, at least you can determine which end is giving you problems.

bet there's a coin stuck in there, i had an annoying rattle from mine and the occasional sticky incident, stripped it out and found a pound in there, bargain, my car cost me a quid less

get a strong ruler and force the coin out of the way. I had the same... it will scratch your astray a bit but you can polish that out.

i got similar issue with my Prefacelift car - the ashtry which i assume you are just supposed to ush and then have it slide out (some kind of sprung mechanism?) just plain refuses. i was once able to prize it open, but then pshed it back in to see if i'd fixed it ... but i hadn't. think there might be a sring missing or un-attached somewhere... anyone else seen this in there pre-face car?
