gearbox whine..

Post by samtheman » Thu Oct 16, 2003 2:46 pm

on my 40k service i asked the audi guys to check out a slight whine when i accelerated hard, i noticed it most in fourth, they said my gearbox oil was rather low, i'd lost about 25% he said, but there was no sign of any leaks, where did it go then? and what if its been low for ever?? should i be worried about this or not? they said not to worry, but they would wouldn't they?? anyone got a slight whine from their gearbox?? My car (60K miles) has a whine too. My dealer told me the tech had noticed a slight gearbox whine. To be honest I'd heard the whine under load, but assumed it was the turbos. Still not sure! Either way it could be $$$ One reason I took out the extra year's Audi warranty.

My car also whines in reverse, but I think this is pretty universal.

i think all S4's whine in reverse, its only a slight whine in 2nd and fourth i think, but could be in all gears, but i cant hear it over the revs in first and road noise in 5th or 6th, oh well, at least i'm not the only one!! thanks

I had a whine on first gear which grew louder with time.

Diagnosis - worn input shaft (after breaking the gearbox down and checking).

I think it's one of those things you just keep an eye (ear) on. And then make sure you have it repaired by a company that knows what it's doing.

Now you have a new whine: It's the missus saying "why is everyone looking at us and making that 'shaking' motion with their hand?".
