Wow  , I had a rs4 engine that had done the exact same thing !!!!! I did think it was down to a snapped cam belt as i got the engine for parts with no history.
I hope you get it sorted soon , your in good hands.

I used to swear by Synta Gold, but my local GSF no longer sell it and it costs a fortune from the stealers. Instead GSF now sells a similar fully synthetic oil that's approved by Audi. My covers will be coming off on Monday!

I know the exhaust side is sacrificed to more wear than inlet by design but thats catastrophic and looks like inlet? could it of been poor finish on the cam lobe that started cutting into the follower, I suppose it wouldn't take much once the damage started...

About 2 years ago (plus or minus 10 years) I remember seeing an advisory note from one of the German tuning companies that 0W30 oil should no longer be used for the S4 because they had seen cases of premature cam wear.

Might not be entirely relevant...

i just use semi synthetic....i think its just normal synta.
tried it on fully synthetic when it had done only about 30k and it just drunk it ....
a litre a week was to much for me so i went back to semi.

yes the debate will go on with these engines, no one is ever sure what oil to put in...whats the price of that Synta gold? I wonder if it can be purchased somewhere a little cheaper.
