MRC work and tuning advice needed

Post by snadge » Fri Apr 11, 2008 8:53 am

Hi everyone,

well my plan to get work done on my car has been jumped started far to early for my bank balance.

My clutch has slipped away with the fairies.....

car is still driveable but put the power on and it starts slipping.

So when I get work done, I want to get everything that I need to with engine out.

What is the minimum I need to get done.

I have, IPP side intercoolers and AWE manifolds coming with de catted downpipes and a custom twin exhaust.

what is the minimum I need to get alongside a decent clutch kit?

whitch clutch should I be looking at, would a RS4 clutch be ok for this project?

I'm looking for around 460-480 BHP in the end after all mods.

could I just get some K04's fitted with hose kit, intercoolers, manifolds and exhaust alongside a mild remap and everything else can be done later with engine in or is there more parts that need fitted whist the motor is out?

I'm trying to make this engine out as economical as possible at this time.

help would be appreciated, especially from someone at MRC as I feel that they are the boys to do the tune.

check out the MRC 500 option, think your rs4 clutch will be ok for that

Might be worth checking your engine mounts whilst it's all out.

if you want 450+ on ko4s you need to do headgaskets and i would advise a fmic.

Or you go for bigger turbos and keep the side mounts and possibly not do headgaskets.

I would look into the AWE tubulars a bit as i have not fitted any but i have heard of them getting reworked a lot due to cracking.

good idea cos' the uprated ones don't break the bank do they.

Doug, I would prefer not to go the headgasket or FMIC route as I have the side mounted IPP's, so what would be the max on standard KO4's and would the bigger turbos be the RS6 hybrids or the worked ones on minheas MRC 500?

how much do these run at?

Snadge,

I don't think the standard manifolds are that bad, with a little porting and reweld, a lot of power has been seen.

The main problem is the pre cat and the cats. get yourself a fully cleaned out RS4 downpipe, with no pre, main cats. for the money you cant go wrong.

When you say gaskets are you referring to lowering the compression here? Also where do the AWE manifolds tend to crack and why - is it the combination of heat and weight of the turbo. Can't the turbos be braced to reduce stress. I have the Autospeed manifolds for my conversion and will be looking to brace the turbos for extra support.

I have a pair of custom, resonated decatted downpipes coming, I also have the AWE manifolds coming so they're going on

Doug, where do the AWE manifolds crack? I can beef 'em up no problem or make support brackets for the turbos, have TIG welder and am not averse to custom bracket building.

I have enlisted the help of a friend today, arranged the use of 4 poster and engine hoist and now I just need a list of all the stuff I need to buy for the engine out part, at the moment my list consists of..

K04 turbos or hybrids?
engine and gearbox mounts
RS4 clutch.
AWE manifolds.
de catted downpipes.
samco hose kit
IPP SMIC.

Anybody care to add to this?

A few questions though.

where can I get the hybrids in UK, best price?
Any extra bits needed if I go the hybrid route?

samco hose kit, do I need any more hoses?

would it be benificial to replace airbox with RS4 at this point? if so would I need to replace MAF as well or leave that untill the refuelling kit is fitted.

would it be alright to drive the car on the standard map until I can get the refuelling kit fitted or a remap to suit? I don't want to really be paying for 2 remaps but if that is the way I have to go then so be it

Is the oil cooler and lightened flywheel necessary?

What's DTS?

Oil cooler is necessary if you plan to do trackdays.

Lightened flywheel is also worth having for the same reason but may be a tad noisy (probably best to search on lightened flywheels for relevant posts).

ideally you would want full rs4 intake set up,airbox, maf ,accordian,y pipe, larger pipework to turbo inlets,i would also do the headgaskets, rear oil seal,rs4 clutch, new slave cylinder,as well as all other related gaskets including sump gaskets,no cats preferabley, you can run it in on the standar map taking it easy then you would need big injectors and map

If you go K04 route, you probably won't need half the Samco's - which, as good as they appear to be, aren't a match for large metal pipes, like the bi-pipe, y-pipe, tbb etc.
