look athe bore picture and look at that nice big crack down the bore - no way anything is getting rebuilt on that engine.

for whatever reason that cam has started to wear first and led to that damage. It is very unusual for one lobe to wear with no signs of the others starting to wear - so not the usual case of an unloved engine.

bearing in mind it is the very front lobe...do you think that it is starved of oil due to the inertia of the engine or just down to crap cam material??

Excuse my ignorance, but are the cams checked as routine at any point? What I mean is, during cambelt service, etc? Just wondered if not, I assume it may be worth having them checked as a matter of course?

The cams are not usually checked unless you have a ticking, a misfire, or have leaking camcover gaskets... I usually look inside the filler cap and see one lobe - doesn't really help if you have buzzards issue though. It is also wise to check the oil pick, the turbo oil supplies, the play on the turbo shafts.... up but it is just not somehitng that is done on a regular basis otherwise ewvery inspection is a lot of money.

Sorry to see this :( ... I've seen plenty of Ford engines do something like this but never a German engine.

Best of luck with the rebuild
