MRC oil cooler.

Post by Ads4 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 9:15 pm

Was going to report on getting my car back with impressions on the latest mods but got carried away with a ring trip, and Doug's doing the remap this week for the manifolds so not much to go on really, other than the oil cooler. Awesome bit of kit! I was amazed at how much it keeps the temps down, much more than I was expecting. Normal driving doesn't see the temp climb over 80, and a 20 min session round the GP track saw the temperature rise to just below the 120 mark and then stay there.
The last time I did a hard lap around the ring, before Doug fitted the cooler, it was climbing towards the 130 mark and I was getting worried, the same after a 10 min stint at Castle Coombe.
A 'must have' for track days or just days when you can't get off the loud pedal

Doug did mine a while back (along with RS4 IC's etc) but I've not yet done a trackday since it was fitted, certainly keeps the temps down on day-to-day driving.

I must admit I was concerned the needle took a while to move but Doug and Mihnea assured me as soon as it moves a smidgen over the first white line it's warm enough to make steady progress.

Anway, shouldn't you be out tekkin t' whippets out fo't walk lad??

It's obviously a good thing - this oil cooler - but I was under the impression that the general idea with a turbo car is to wait until the oil gets up to temperature and then it's safe to lean on the loud pedal.

Surely an oil cooler means the oil won't get up to temperature as before?

Or is this reduced warm up time, a trade off against the fact that the oil would overheat without the oil cooler?

The oil cooler has a thermostat so doen't cut in until the oil is warm.

Ah right, so it basically just cuts in and stops the oil from getting too hot? So if the oil is too hot it gets too thin and doesn't protect the engine ?

I agree with that :) The S4 should have been fitted with one, it has a cooler for everything else :?

Quality. That cracked me up. Think we should campaign for a POTW award on 246. I see you've found yourself a new hang-out Jules, I think it is destiny, you and Brick Driver were separated at birth. :)
