Rob,

When they did the idler pulley I asked whether or not it was worth doing the timing belt etc at the same time. The guy said no, as it was the other side of the block (excuse terminology here) and that it would take up loads more time and expense (and it has been done).

I don't have vag-com personally but as previosuly stated I think I will get the MAF replaced anyway as I don't know that it has ever been done. Hopefully this will resolve it, if not it is still something that should be done.

Nige, thanks for your optimism, I was getting scared to read the replies.

Thanks again guys

Mark

p.s Will let you know how it goes after MAF is done.

Have you tried running the car with the MAF unplugged to see if it's smoother?

Yep, MAF unplugged, if the car runs better or same as before, MAF is shot. If the cars runs worse then it is not.

The Cambelt is NOT on the other side of the engine, both are at the front. The Cambelt being closest to the engine and the drivebelt being a little further out.

Sounds like an EGT problem. I had the same problem, was the egt(driver's side) due to the car sitting about for 4 months awaiting ko4s to put in. Cleared up though when I got the car back and ran it in. I reckon one of your egts is on its way out.

I spoke to the guy at the garage and he said he would do a health check and replace the MAF for £100. He seemed to think that the symtpons experienced could be the MAF and that would be a good (cheap) place to start and I am not bothered if it doesn't totally cure it as I am sure it needs doing anyway.

Blower, if this does not solve it I will consider the EGT route, although (whether this makes any significant difference or not) it has been sat around for any period of time.
